“No, I don’t think that there’s any need to continue,” Chas declared grimly. “Claire Robeson, you are under arrest for the murder of Leigh Treadworth.”

  CHAPTER NINETEEN

  * * *

Missy shuddered as she and Echo talked about the bombshell news that had happened the previous day.

“I can’t imagine that you guys were all so worried about me being in danger, and it was Chas who was keeping company with a murderer the whole time,” Missy shook her head.

“Yeah, that’s pretty terrifying. Thank goodness Andrew went to Spencer with his suspicions, and Spencer believed him,” Echo commented, taking a bite of her cupcake.

“I blame myself for distracting Chas,” Missy looked miserable. “He probably would’ve picked up on it sooner if he hadn’t been worried about me interfering in his investigation and putting myself in danger.”

“Give him some credit, he would’ve figured it out. Andrew just chose to go to Spencer rather than Chas because Spencer isn’t a cop. No one ever wants to believe that a cop is the bad guy. They’re the ones who keep us safe,” Echo shrugged.

“Well, all’s well that ends well, I guess,” Missy sighed, picking at her cupcake.

“Absolutely, and speaking of ending well…” Echo leaned forward with a look on her face which indicated that juicy gossip was about to burst forth.

“What?” Missy asked, eager for some happy news.

“Spencer happened to be over at your house when I dropped off Jasmine with Mattie this morning, and I could be mistaken, but I thought I heard him ask her out on a date,” Echo grinned.

“Really?” Missy clapped her hands in delight. “Oh that’s wonderful. I’ve been wanting him to get back into the swing of things again.”

“I think they’d make an adorable couple,” Echo nodded.

“Well, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. It’s a big deal that he’s willing to go on a date. Who knows when or if he’ll be ready for a relationship?”

“True, but I always say that it just takes the right person to make you ready for a relationship,” Echo shrugged.

“I don’t know if it’s that simple, but it’ll be fun to find out. We can’t tease him about it though,” Missy admonished.

“I know, I know, I’ll keep my matchmaking to myself,” Echo giggled.

“Good. You know, one good thing came out of this whole ugly murder mess,” Missy mused.

  “Yeah, what’s that?”

“I realized that I don’t have to be a daring detective in order to feel good about myself. I love being a cupcake baker and wife and mother,” she smiled.

“Does that mean that you’re going to stop interfering in Chas’ cases?” Echo raised an eyebrow.

“Let’s not be hasty,” Missy winked and the best friends broke into gales of laughter.
