“You bitch. Do not involve a sick child in your game.” Shelby was outraged.
“Do not worry. I will let you play God with the brat. After the Casminos are done with the condominium it will be fumigated and then available to our son. Janae and I like our arrangement. You will have some apologizing to do to Mrs. Samples. A couple of carats should suffice.”
“I want Mae Casmino to be well. I will play your fucking game. Leave Lexi out of this.”
Conclusion
Weeks went by and the Conrads and the Casminos made it to Boston. Shelby had called Lexi each day and reassured her that everything would work out. Surgery was Monday morning and Shelby arranged to be at the hospital. He would see Lexi for the first time since Baxter. He would never see her again. She would be too busy with Mae and her memory of him would fade. He hoped it would end so.
“Lexi.” Shelby grabbed her tightly. She had lost about ten pounds. She looked delicate.
“Oh my God. I am so happy you are here. I want you to meet Lucy.” Her daughter was a carbon copy of her mother. She was beautiful.
The nurse in charge emerged from the O.R. She headed for Shelby and pulled him aside.
“Dr. Collins needs your assist Dr. Conrad. He says you are familiar with the case. The patient is in trouble.”
“I will scrub up and join Dr. Collins immediately.”
“Lexi. I am going to help Mae. I am not running away from this and I am not running away from you.”
“I love you Lexi.”
She had no idea what Shelby was running from but she did not care. He had run to her.
