“Be ready, Clio,” my mother finally said. Her voice was barely louder than a breath of wind, and I could see that those three words alone were draining her of her power. She reached out a hand toward me as she started slowly fading from sight.
“Be ready for what?” I shook my head. Why was she here? And why hadn’t she come sooner? What was she trying to tell me?
“Mom?” I prompted.
Her eyes were wide with panic as she noticed her hand disappearing in front of her face. She tried to speak again, and I only just caught the end of her words before she disappeared.
“Be ready, Clio,” she said, her body gone and her voice but a whisper on the breeze. “Be ready: the chaos is beginning.”
