Charley looked to Sandy, then to Sven, and then at the masses of Low Scores locked outside of the Tower. “We’re all coming.”
Orson’s eyes widened as he laughed. “So you are Moses now? They won’t last, but have it your way. Let’s go. We will just part the Red Sea and kill a few hundred animal combinations on our way to my father. We may even meet him halfway. That will certainly be fun with your army of ragtag low-Score misfits.”
Charley nodded curtly, gave a yell to the crowd clustering around them, and then turned back to Orson and Grigor. “Let’s go.”
Sandy grabbed his arm and squeezed in tightly beside him. Sven pushed up next to his bad shoulder, and said, “Listen.” He lowered his head. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what—”
“Can it.” Charley tried to grin, but it came out as more of a grimace. His shoulder was throbbing like a second heartbeat. “Just keep up, okay—don’t make us leave you for the lanthers.”
“The what?” Sven looked up, his eyes growing wide.
“Never mind. Don’t worry about it.”
A little glimmer of the old Sven surfaced for a moment; his mouth quirked up at the corners, his eyes displaying a hint of a smile. “Whatever.”
Charley set off behind Grigor’s massive back, a moving mountain set in outline against the twinkling stars, which were just appearing over the western horizon. Sandy could take care of herself, as could Hank, who was, surprisingly, trundling along with them. He was supporting the weight of Elena who leaned against him as if in a daze. A few other High Scores were following along too, and he would have to keep a close eye on Sven and the motley collection of Low Scores that trailed behind them, not to mention Orson and whatever devious plans he had in store for them. But despite everything, he felt good. He was on his way to finding Orson’s father and finally getting some answers. And he still wanted revenge.
It was for the best.
