“I know,” Sophie said, nodding. “Thank you, Irene. For giving me that choice.”
Irene patted her hand fondly. “It was a pleasure, my dear.” She nodded at where Callum was still sleeping in the other room. “Take good care of each other in the years to come. A new bloodline has been started this night, one that will do great things.”
Sophie’s eyes widened, her hand going instinctively to her stomach. “But how did you—?”
Irene rose to her feet. “It’s getting late and an old woman needs her sleep. Goodbye, my dear.”
She shuffled over to the door and left, pulling the door shut quietly behind her. Sophie considered going after the woman—she still had so many questions—but she instinctively knew she wouldn’t find her.
Instead, her hand went back to her stomach, feeling the new life that pulsed there. A smile spread across her face. She got up and went back into the bed chamber where Callum was snoring softly. She climbed into bed beside him and he instinctively reached out to pull her close, although he didn’t wake.
Sophie smiled, snuggling into her husband’s embrace. Yes, everything was a choice and for the first time in her life, she was totally, utterly sure she had made the correct one.
