“I’m so grateful,” Terry told him as they waited for the elevator. “I’m still nursing so Warren had to bring the baby and Nathan put up such a fuss when we dropped him off at my mom’s that we had to bring him, too. The meeting went on longer than I expected and—” she gestured to her swollen chest “—I’m getting desperate.”

  Jonathan was getting desperate, too.

“I should warn you that Nathan is going through a screaming phase. The doctor says he’s reacting to the new baby and wants attention. We’re supposed to ignore him when he screams so we won’t reinforce the behavior.”

Did Jonathan have earplugs to go with that alcohol? Or maybe he could bash his head against the wall and knock himself out. “I think what everybody needs is my special macaroni and cheese. It’s hard to scream when your mouth is full of macaroni and cheese.”

  “Nathan can scream through anything.”

As the elevator doors opened Jonathan muttered, “I meant me.”
