“Sounds like a plan,” Jasmine concurred with a satisfied smile, as they stopped at a red light. “And we’ll turn off our phones. A candlelit dinner, a romantic film, then bed. Paradise.” She closed her eyes and sighed with contentment. But then she spoke again. “Except for Grant and Imogen. We should tell them.”

Alastair nodded. “And Bradley and Jillian.”

  “Maggie and Lawrence.”

“OK, you win. Forget the candlelit dinner for two. We’ll have an impromptu party instead.”

“Good idea. A party it is. We’ll have to do some more shopping!”

They exchanged loving glances as the red light turned to green.

“It’s been an interesting day,” Alastair mused. “We’ve a lot to celebrate. Things are looking up for your mum, my mum, Maggie’s mum.”

“It does feel kind of special.”

“It does.” He paused for just a moment. “It’s the first day of the rest of our lives.”

Jasmine nodded her agreement. It wasn’t just a well-worn cliché; it was perfectly true. “Let’s make it count,” she said with a smile.
