Coles pressed his lips together. “We’ll confirm that.”

  “What about Dale Thompson?”

“He was feeding information to Al-Salakhi in exchange for funding for his next movie, and more. The move would have allowed him to cut ties with his Hollywood moneymen. Somehow I don’t think Al-Salakhi would have followed through with it. Oh, an additional note on that front: Marjorie Barnes, the writer, has disappeared. Foul play is suspected.”

“What?” Andy put his coffee cup down. “You’re not saying she’s involved in this?”

  “We cannot yet confirm that.”

“She can’t be. You’re just jerking my chain.”

The man didn’t answer. Would he ever drop the stonewall routine?

“And what about me? Can we pull the plug on your star-turned-spy campaign?”

Coles actually smiled. “I think you’re looking at it all wrong, Mr. Andrews. Despite the twists and turns of your adventure, you have succeeded. You not only saved the day, but you also earned the trust and respect of a top Hollywood operative in Serena, a silver screen mainstay in Cooper, and the admiration of the man who will one day be king of Saudi Arabia. I’d say you’ve earned your pay, Marine.”

Andy grunted. He hadn’t had time to think about the possible takeaways. Then he realized what they meant.

“You want me to keep doing this,” he said.

Coles shrugged and walked towards the exit. “You’re very observant when you want to be, Mr. Andrews. Get well, and we’ll talk soon.”

Coles had just made it to the door when Andy asked, “Is there any way I can get out of this?”

His boss turned, grinned, and said, “I’m just getting used to having you around. Tell me why I would ever think of reassigning you.” Then he turned again and left without another word.

Andy was left thinking that Coles would never show him his entire hand. For Andy, that meant more blind adventures down winding paths. The Marine in him grudgingly admitted that the idea sounded palatable, even enticing.

“Semper Gumby,” Andy muttered and then left the room to find his new friends.
