As always when I write a story, I try to draw on real life to enrich the characters. In this book, Taryn spent quite a bit of time coming to terms with the death of her best friend, Paige. That part of the plot hit very close to home for me, as I lost my childhood best friend when I was twenty in an unspeakable tragedy.
Her loss is something I’ve never completely gotten over. And while I’m no longer mired in grief, I still think about Bonnie everyday, and her unfinished life. And maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be. A lesson I was supposed to learn.
Life is precious. And sometimes short. Bitter and sweet and everything in between. And as Chase so eloquently put it, “a gift.”
And speaking of Chase—he is another character who I fashioned after a real person. Or people. I gave him the happily ever after that some who struggle with addiction may never get. Because there is always hope. And though his path was rocky, I wanted that to shine through above all else.
Never, ever, ever give up.
