Rural Rides Page 66

by William Cobbett

Wilson, Sir Robert Thomas (1777–1849): ‘Bobby of the Borough’ reform-minded MP for Southwark (1818–31).

Winchester, Bishop of: see Tomline, Sir George Pretyman.

Winnington, Sir Thomas Edward (1772–1839): of Stamford Court in Worcestershire. He was an agricultural improver and served briefly as MP for the county. See Cole, RR, vol. HI, p. 1048.

Winter, Thomas (1572–1606): associate of Guy Fawkes’s and fellow conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot.

Winterton, Edward Garth Turner (1758–1831): second Earl; of Shillinglee Park in Surrey.

Wodehouse, Edmond (1784–1855): ‘the wise barn-orator’. He was a Norfolk landowner and Tory MP for the county (1817–30,1835–55). See Cole, RR, vol. Ill, pp. 1048–9.

Wodehouse, Colonel John (1771–1846): Norfolk landowner; Tory MP for Marlborough (1818–26). See Cole, RR, vol. Ill, p. 1049.

Wood, John (1790–1838): ‘bound-over Wood’; barrister, Whig candidate at Preston election of 1826. Cobbett was also a candidate in this violent proceeding. Wood was one of the two victors, but he was ‘bound-over’ to keep the peace after coming close to fighting a duel over an incident on the hustings. See Stanley, Edward George Geoffrey Smith.

Wood, Sir John Page (1796–1866): succeeded the Rev. Robert Fellowes as chaplain to Queen Caroline.

Wood, Sir Matthew (1768–1843): Lord Mayor of London (1815–16); and MP for the City (1817–43). He was a Radical and worked with Cobbett in the Queen Caroline affair.

Wood, Ottiwell (1769–1825): Liverpool merchant and Radical.

Woodman, Mr: farmer near Ramsbury in Wiltshire.

Wright, the Rev. Robert (1772–1850): a parson-magistrate of Hampshire whom Cobbett despised for dismissing the case of farmer Richard Déller, who had charged a gamekeeper of the Duke of Buckingham’s with trespass and the destruction of property. Deller was in turn committed to trial by Wright for allegedly assaulting the Duke’s gamekeeper.

Wright, Susanna: follower of the Radical reformer Richard Carlile who persisted in selling his tracts. She was convicted of blasphemy and libel.

Wriothesleys: family that amassed land and wealth out of the spoils of the Reformation. See DNB.

Wykeham, William (1324–1404): Chancellor of England under Edward III, and Bishop of Winchester from 1367. Cobbett liked almost everything to do with the reign of Edward III, save perhaps the Black Death.

Wyndham, George (1789–1869): succeeded to the Petworth estates of the Earl of Egremont.

Wyndham, William (1687–1740): ally of Lord Bolingbroke’s. Wynn, Charles Watkin Williams (1775–1850): MP for the notorious borough of Old Sarum and later for Montgomeryshire.

Yate, Honywood: name that seems to have been cobbled together by the Dobyns and Honywoods who lived at Mailing Abbey in Kent. See Cole, RR, vol. Ill, p. 1051.

York, Frederick Augustus (1763–1827): Duke of York, second son of George III.

Young, Arthur (1741–1820): agricultural writer who moved from unconditional support for enclosure and other agricultural ‘improvements’ to a measured, socially conscious approach to agricultural innovation. Like Cobbett after him, Young travelled extensively around England (as well as France and Ireland) and put his discoveries on paper–publishing many volumes of tours and contributing regularly to his periodical Annals of Agriculture (1793–1808). Young was also a frequent contributor to the Political Register in its early years, usually taking issue with Cobbett about enclosure (which Young strongly supported then) as well as Cobbett’s opinion that commerce and manufacturing industry should be dispensed with. As happened with Cobbett, the more Young saw of rural England, the more he came to believe that agricultural workers had been wronged.

Young, Edward (1683–1765): author of Night Thoughts and of many other poems and plays. He was born at Upham, near Winchester.
