He shook his head, deep brown eyes meeting mine. “Not if I have any say in it.”
“And do you? What about Fang?”
“My father won’t force us to go, so we’re okay. Don’t worry. We aren’t going to leave you, Lila.”
Our eyes locked and held. The air stirred around us, warm and damp, but all I could think about was Ki’s mouth, what it would taste like, and how it would feel to hold him against me. My breath sped up, my heart pounding in my chest. Would he make the first move? Should I? How was I so bold when it came to telling off ancient dragon chiefs or flying into battle, but I hesitated like a schoolgirl when it came to kissing boys?
Oh, the heck with it.
Closing my eyes, I very deliberately leaned in.
Our lips met in an explosion of tingles. Kissing Ki felt exactly how I thought it would—wonderful.
My hands sought out his chest, slipping over his shirt, over those smooth muscles as he wrapped his arms around my back. Bodies pressed together, he tilted his head, kissing me harder as heat and light burned from my chest and tripped down my limbs. It was like I was flying again.
Ki wasn’t going to leave me. None of them were going to leave me. That had been my biggest fear, the thing crushing me under its weight. I had been worried about being alone, left to my leaky lighthouse, ailing father, and cranky cat. Had I taken the movie Mary Poppins to heart? Almost as if I believed that because the battles were currently over, the dragons would take wing, floating on to some new girl who needed them more than I did.
But Ki was here. His hands were in my hair, his mouth on mine. I gripped his shirt, pulling him tighter as I kissed him without fear.
We were together. Nothing would pull us any of us apart—not if I had anything to say about it, anyway.
