Wrestling With Love Page 8

“Apparently, she has one rule; don't bring the skanks back to their house and especially not their bedroom. Dad never was one for rules.”

  Mila shook her head.

“Mila. Can I ask you something?”

  “Of course!”

“If you hate him so much, then why did you come work for him?” Mila asked.

Trevor hesitated as if he was finally asking himself the same question for the first time.

“Well, when my contract was up down in Mexico and I moved home I was offered contracts by a few companies. Then he called and said the company could really use me and it'd be very lucrative for me. He then gave me a bunch of lines about how he missed me, and he really wanted to get to know me and repair our relationship. I guess I fell for it.”

Trevor never looked up from his lap.

“He didn't give a damn about me. He just wanted to capitalize on the Dane Styles name.”

Mila moved over and snuggled up to Trevor, who instantly wrapped his arm around her.

“And that's why I know you'll be a great Dad. You could never do that to someone else, especially your own child.”

“I love you, ya know that?”

“But of course!” Mila smiled up at him as her head rested on his chest.

She wasn't sure when but they both fell asleep like that. When Mila awoke, Trevor was on his phone.

“Yeah, fine. I said okay! Bye.”

Trevor dropped the phone onto the coffee table with a thud.

  “What's going on?” Mila asked.

“I'm sorry babe did I wake you?”

  “That's okay, what's up?”

  “That was my father.”

Mila looked down at Trevor's phone which was still displaying the most recent incoming calls.

“Seriously, you have your father's number saved in your phone under 'Lucifer'?”

Trevor chuckled. “Got to call a spade a spade babe!”

“Well, what did old Lu have to say?”

“Just being a dick, as usual.”

Trevor hung his head, rubbing his face with his palms.

“He wants me to do some meet and greet tomorrow in Jersey. He didn't even ask how I've been doing or if I need anything. He's a walking migraine!”

“You can't do that; you're not medically cleared to wrestle and all of us in creative agreed on no public appearances until you're able to return!”

  “I told him all that.”

  “And?”

“And I leave for Jersey around noon tomorrow.”

Mila, anger bubbling up, hopped up from the couch and started for the bedroom.

“Unbelievable! You know you are messing up weeks of plans that I was a key writer for!?”

“Baby, I don't like it any more than you do but what do you want me to do? Call him back and tell him to stick it up his ass? Believe me, I'd love to, but I can't!”

“Ugh!! What good are we as writing staff if he's just going to overrule every choice we make?”

Trevor stood up and walked over to Mila, arms stretched out for a hug.

  “Come here.”

Mila fell into his arms, her head hitting his rock-hard chest.

“Ow! Damn you and your hard body!”

Trevor laughed and wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on her head.

“My apologies Ms. Stevens, would you prefer I get man boobs?”

“Oh, just shut up and kiss me you pain in my butt!”

As he kissed her, Trevor's phone rang from the coffee table.

“Again?” he sighed. He walked over and glanced at the caller ID.

  “It's Randall!”

Mila screwed up her face in confusion as he answered the phone. Deciding it can't be that important she excused herself to the restroom as Trevor talked to Randall. As soon as she walked out Trevor was at her side with a shocked look on his face.

  “What's going on?” she asked.

“Randall's flipping out because he has a date tonight!”

“I thought he didn't do dates. Just hotel rooms.”

  Trevor smiled rather mischievously.

  “Oh, it gets better!”

  Mila stared at him expectantly.

  “This date... it's with Violet!”

  ***

Christmas Eve morning saw Mila feeling exhausted and not in the mood for dressing up for that night's dinner. She stood in her bedroom looking at her now slightly protruding belly in the full-length mirror.

“It's a good thing we're telling everyone tonight. Pretty soon I won't be able to hide this!” she thought.

  “Hey you.”

Trevor walked into the bedroom, phone in hand.

“So, Samantha called me. She's suddenly interested in my life since she found out about the baby.”

Trevor had given the news to his father and sister when he went to the meet and greet in New Jersey. Samantha had immediately embraced the whole thing and was super excited. As for Mr. Donahue, he simply said don't let it interfere in either of their work lives.

“Father of the year, ladies and gentlemen!” Mila thought to herself.

“Baby she's trying, cut her some slack.”

Trevor was now sprawled out on the bed.

“I know, I know, I just don't know if I can trust her that fast. She's always been full of excuses for Dad and why he is the way he is.”

Trevor stood up and made his way over to Mila, placing his hand on her growing bump. In a mock cutesy voice, he said:

  “Grandpa's just a douche bag, isn't he?”

Mila couldn't hold back the laughter.

“Go put the ornament on the tree and stop filling the baby's head with negativity before it's even here!”

Mila had found an adorable ornament on Etsy that was a frame to place your ultrasound photos in. She and Trevor had decided to place it on the tree and see if any of their friends noticed it before they announced the big news. Current betting odds were that Randall would be the last to notice it.

“Yes ma'am! Hey, did you invite Phoebe?”

“Yes, although isn't the announcement lost on her? She probably knew before we did!”

“That's a strong possibility” said Trevor.

Later that afternoon Trevor and Mila were in the kitchen working on dinner.

“Babe, why don't you take a nap? I know you're exhausted and I can handle it from here.”

Mila tried, and failed, to stifle the yawn that was creeping up.

  “I'm fine.”

Trevor narrowed his eyes at her, “Babe, seriously? You almost face planted in a pile of chopped vegetables a few minutes ago!”

“Fine, I'll lay down for a bit. Are you sure you've got this?”

“Yes, the roast is already in the oven, all that's left really is the sides and we don't need to get those going until a bit closer to time.”

“Where did you get to be such a great cook?”

“Aunt Ellen. She's an unreal cook. She always wanted me to be self-sufficient, so she made sure I knew how to cook for myself.”

“Do I ever get to meet Aunt Ellen?” Mila asked.

“Actually, I was going to ask if you wanted to go visit her in the new year. She lives upstate in Rochester.”

  “I'd love to!”

“Great, I'll talk to her about it probably tomorrow. I usually call her on holidays to check in. Now you and the jellybean go rest!”

As she walked down the hall, Mila called out, “We're going, we're going!”

After an hour and a half nap, Mila was awake and putting on some makeup when Trevor came into the bedroom looking sharp as ever in his black slacks and slightly fitted black button-down shirt. Mila herself had chosen a simple hunter green dress that concealed her tiny bump.

  “You look amazing!”

Mila stood up from her vanity.

“Thank you, and you look like we might not make it to dinner if we don't leave this bedroom right now!”

  “Damn hormones!” she thought.

; Trevor laughed, kissed the top of her head and led her down the hallway by the hand, stopping in the kitchen.

  “Does dinner look good?”

Mila glanced into the pots on the stove, white corn, green beans. In the oven the roast was keeping warm along with some roasted carrots and potatoes.

“It looks amazing! Although, I got to admit I'm glad we decided to go with warming up some store-bought dinner rolls because I really don't know that I'd have had the patience to make cornbread or something!”

Both were laughing as the doorbell rang. Trevor, suddenly looking anxious and nervous, went to answer it. First through the door was Britani and her new boyfriend of about a month and a half, Lucas.

Phoebe arrived next, followed closely by Violet and Randall, who arrived together. Mila had gathered that they were giving the whole dating thing another try but what she still didn't know was why.

Dinner was a hit, conversation flowing freely. Afterwards, Mila and Trevor ushered their friends into the living room, where Trevor spoke up first.

“Alright so, Mila and I have some gifts for you guys. But the biggest one is a guessing game.”

“So, if you'll please go search the Christmas tree for evidence!” Mila said.

“Evidence? Is the surprise a dead body or something?” Britani said as Randall yelled out “Gee thanks for spoiling it for the rest of us Brit!”

  “Move it, folks!”

“Alright alright, we're going!” Violet said.

Trevor and Mila stood hand in hand as their friends circled the Christmas tree, searching for their clue. Finally, they heard an ear-piercing shriek from the other side of the tree.

Britani stuck her head around the tree.

“AHHHHHH!!! I KNEW IT!! OH MY GOD!!”

  “Let me see.”

Britani handed the ornament to Randall before bolting over and hugging Mila and Trevor.

“A framed black and white picture of a jellybean?” Randall said with a knowing wink.

“You're bringing the curve down for the whole country there, buddy!”

“I was freaking kidding Brit!” Randall said, as Britani jumped up and down in excitement.

Randall made his way over to kiss Mila on the cheek before giving Trevor a typical "bro hug".

  “Congrats guys, this is awesome!”

Out of the corner of her eye Mila noticed a quiet Violet still holding the ornament. But before she could say anything Trevor interrupted.

“Alright, so that was part one of the surprise!”

Mila screwed her face up in confusion and then jaw dropping shock as Trevor dropped to one knee. Suddenly everything faded away but Trevor.

“You've made me the happiest I've ever been in my life. You're one of a kind and the only woman in this world for me. So, Mila Stevens, will you marry me?”

  Chapter Fifteen

T ime had stopped. Mila was paralyzed with a ton of emotions. Fear, joy, anxiety, happiness, confusion. You name it, Mila was feeling it. Everything around her seemed to have faded away, the only sound she could hear was her rapidly pounding heart. Then it happened. She blinked twice to be sure she was seeing correctly. There, once again, stood Mikey.

“Sweet pea, you do know this is the part where you answer him, right?”

Mila could only think of the things she wanted to say to him.

“What is happening? How is this happening? How does it seem like you're really standing there?”

“Because I am silly. You think I'd go to all this effort if I didn't think you were about to ruin this? You're second guessing again Mila, questioning if you're really ‘allowed’ to be happy with him. I'll tell you again, it's ok to be happy. That's all I want to see is you being genuinely happy.”

Mila blinked again, still in shock.

“You just going to leave the poor guy there on one knee? It's time Mila. Time to start the next part of your life. Remember I love you, and I'm always with you. I'm proud of you sweet pea. So, answer him already!”

Just like that Mila snapped back into the present and a very scared looking Trevor still down on one knee.

“I'm sorry... I'm just shocked, I was not expecting this!”

“I wanted to surprise you, Mila!”

  “Yes!” she suddenly shouted.

Trevor stared into her eyes as though he was looking for confirmation.

  “Yes?”

“Yes Trevor Morgan, I will marry you!”

Suddenly their friends all broke out into wild cheers and applause as Trevor slipped the stunning ring on her finger.

  “Trevor, it's beautiful!”

She wrapped her arms around Trevor and buried her face into his neck.

“This calls for a toast!” said Randall, “Where's the wine I brought?”

Britani patted him on the back.

  “Now you're talking Davis!”

Britani began pouring everyone a glass of wine. As she watched, Mila hadn't even noticed Trevor slip into the kitchen until he returned, holding a half full wine glass in her face.

“Grape juice,” he said. “I thought you'd want to join us, so I bought some at the store yesterday.”

“Thanks babe, what would I do without you?”

“Funny, I was about to ask you the same question!”

Mila smiled before giving him a quick kiss and turning her attention toward their friends, where Britani was preparing to give a speech. Mila couldn't help but notice how distant Violet was acting. She'd congratulated them but she seemed as if her mind was a million miles away.

“To two of my favorite people on earth; Trevor, who became like a brother to me many years ago and always has his sissy's back, and Mila, who so quickly just clicked with me and became one of my bestest friends who I love dearly. I wish you both a lifetime of love and happiness together!” Britani said, looking like she was holding back tears.

Everyone raised their glasses in celebration, and as they were drinking Mila slipped away into her bedroom.

Making her way over to her nightstand she pulled open the drawer and reached in the back to pull out a small box.

She took the diamond band and solitaire engagement ring out of the box and just stared for a moment.

  “Oh Mikey” she whispered.

Mila sat back on the bed before continuing.

“I don't know how you're doing what you're doing but I can never thank you enough. Sometimes I can't help but feel like I'm living the life we planned but with another man and that. . . that's terrifying!”

She wiped the few tears that had fallen.

“But Mikey, my love, he really makes me happy. I can't remember feeling this safe and content since you've been gone. I hope you're happy, healthy and that I make you proud. I love you Mikey, always.”

As she kissed the rings and tucked them away there was a knock at her door before Trevor stuck his head in.

“Hey baby, have you seen Violet? We were going to open presents and maybe play Heads Up!”

“What? Something is seriously going on with that girl!” Mila thought.

As she finally opened the door, Mila looked at her new fiancé.

“What do you mean, when did she leave the living room?”

“Not sure. She just slipped out like a ninja. Randall is in there freaking out cause she's MIA.”

Just then it dawned on Mila.

“Does Bixler's open on Christmas Eve?” she asked.

Bixler's was the small 1950's style diner about a block away from where Mila was staying.

“Limited hours, I think yeah. Why, you think she'd go there?”

“It's the first place I can think of.”

Mila and Trevor made their way out to the living room.

“Brit, are you thinking what I'm thinking?”

“Corner booth at Bixler's eating her feelings by way of a big piece of strawberry pie.”

  “Shall we?”

  “Let's roll!” Britni replied.

  “No, I need to go!”

Everyone was standing in stunned silence at Randall's statement.

Mila put her hands on her hips and finally looked at Randall.

“Alright, Randall, can I talk to you in the kitchen a minute? And Brit, keep trying to get her on her cell okay?”

  “On it!”

Randall looked genuinely terrified at what Mila was about to say as they entered the kitchen.

  “Okay, so spill it!”

“What do you mean?” Randall asked.

“What the hell is going on with you and Vi?”

  “Now or like, ever?”

“Randall, this is so not the time to play piss off the pregnant chick!”

“Alright I’ll tell you but right now we’ve got to go find her!”

“If I know my friends -”

Just then Britani stuck her head into the kitchen, interrupting Mila’s sentence.

“Lucas and I are heading to Bixler's. We're taking Lucas's Jeep since it's snowing!”

“Okay, be safe and call me as soon as you find her!”

No sooner had they left than Mila turned back to Randall.

“Alright, so what happened between you two?”

Randall was standing in Mila's kitchen looking super uncomfortable. Mila had already taken a seat at the island.

  “Earth to Randall?”

  “I know, I know. It's just a complicated thing.”

  “Try me!”

“Okay so, as you may or may not know I started with PEW 6 years ago.”

“As 1/3 of The Domination alongside Adam Murphy and Scott Simon!”

“Okay Miss Encyclopedic Knowledge, we all get it, you're a walking ball of wrestling knowledge!”

“And don't you forget it!” she said, grinning ear to ear.

“Anyway, when I first joined, I was still pretty green in the ring. I'd only wrestled for one other organization back home in Ohio.”

“I was always told to stay late and work with the trainers. One day I was running through a match I had coming up, making sure I felt comfortable with all the spots, and I noticed Violet sitting in the empty audience chairs. She was sitting with Brit and another girl who worked there at the time, Morgan Lee. But she was looking at me, like watching me. After I was done, I saw her heading back towards the locker room areas and, I don't know, I couldn't help it, I had to follow her. So, I did. I ran after her, asked her out for that night and she. . .she shot me down!”
