  Up on her feet in a flash, she brushes herself off, blaming her skirt and shoes.

  I rush down the steps, choking back tears, and hug her for as long as she’ll let me.

  “I’m sorry,” I tell her. Sorry about everything. And I am.

  And I’m not.
