Chasing Time: A Love Through Time Novel Page 31

by Stephany Wallace

Samantha looked into his eyes, and more tears fell. “It is.”

He was able to breathe again. “Then I’ll be with you every step of the way, you are not alone, Sam.”

Jonathan leaned in and kissed her, praying with everything inside him that they would be together again.

Jonathan looked at Samantha with a heavy heart while she slept. They sat in the plane, and were just about to land in Detroit. In just one more hour she would be leaving for Oxford with her Father.

He couldn’t even describe what he was feeling. Although he knew with absolute certainty that she loved him, there was a part of him that feared she would realize her love for Christopher was stronger, and would make her want to move on. He wouldn’t blame her for it, how could he, when he had caused all of this. Everything that was happening was his fault. It was his fault for not believing earlier, for not accepting the simple truth that his heart was screaming at him to understand. That he loved her, that she was everything to him, that he was hers. He shook his head as a tear ran down his cheek, he wiped it away dismissively.

“If she loves him more than she loves me, if she will be happier with him then I’ll have to find a way to accept that. I don’t want to cause her more pain than I already have. I just want her to be happy, even if that means she’s with him.”

He turned to look at her again, and placed two small kisses on her forehead.

Samantha opened her eyes, and smiled just as the pilot announced the landing. She straightened herself and her eyes fell on Jonathan’s face, immediately realizing the pain etched on it. Her heart constricted at the sight. He smiled shaking his head, as though it was nothing. Bringing her hand to his lips, he kissed it. His eyes closed the moment his lips touched her skin.

“But if it’s me she wants,” he continued his thought. “If it’s me she wants to be with, like she has told me so many times, then I will wait for her as long as it takes, and I will fight for her with everything I have.”

They got off the plane, and walked through the airport to find Frank in the international flights section, like they had agreed. He was standing there with Angela, and Grandma Rose. Their flight to London would leave in an hour so they would have to check in and board soon.

“There they are,” Frank said, finally spotting them walking towards him. “How was Boston?”

Samantha walked up to him, hugging him tight. “Amazing, Dad. Everything is so beautiful,” Reaching into her purse, she pulled out a replica of Mickey Mantle’s signed ball that she bought at Fenway Park for him. She smiled wide, and handed it to him.

“Oh, wow. Thanks sweetheart,” Frank answered, admiring the ball then kissed her cheek. I already checked our luggage in, and the bag you have can just be left as your carry on. Let’s go sit down for a bit before we have to go in,” they all nodded, following him.

They sat at the coffee shop, enjoying a few drinks while Samantha told them about the places they visited while in Boston. While she talked to Angela and Grandma Rose, Frank looked at Jonathan, motioning for him to follow. He got up from the table, and walked out the coffee shop.

Jonathan nodded a bit confused, but followed him out. He stepped next to Frank and waited. They remained silent until Frank turned to look at Jonathan with unshed tears in his eyes. Jonathan became concerned.

“Is everything ok, Frank? Has something…” he stopped talking when Frank held his hand, and placed something on it.

Jonathan looked at it, speechless. He was looking at Grace’s wedding ring. Frank placed his other hand above Jonathan’s, and held it tight.

“You were right before, son. This is Samantha’s ring. She needs to have it, but I believe in my heart that you are the one meant to offer it to her,” he said smiling, although a tear had escaped him.

Jonathan hugged Frank, understanding clearly that he had just given him his blessing to propose to Samantha. He pulled back holding Frank’s gaze.

“I don’t know what to say. This means more to me than I’ll ever be able to express, Frank.”

Frank smiled, placing his hand on Jonathan’s shoulder and holding it firmly. “Just love her with all your heart, son, like I loved her Mother when she wore that ring.”

Samantha stood with Jonathan in front of the boarding gate, while everyone said goodbye. He pulled her into his arms and she held on to him as if her life depended on it, because right now, she felt like it did.

Frank kissed Grandma Rose on the cheek, and faced Angela. She hugged him tightly as the tears fell from her eyes.

“I’m going to miss you, old grumpy man,” she said, wiping her cheeks and he chuckled.

“I’m going to miss you too. You two take care of yourselves. I asked Roger to drop by once in a while, and keep an eye on you two. Just in case you need anything,” he answered, and kissed Angela’s cheek.

“Thank you Frank, for always taking care of us,” Grandma Rose said, giving him one last hug.

They walked past Jonathan and Samantha, to give them some privacy. Samantha really tried not to give in to the sadness, yet the tears kept sliding down her cheeks while Jonathan held her in his arms. She could feel her heart tearing once again.

“I can’t do this Jonathan. I don’t want to leave you,” her mind screamed at her to tell him, but she couldn’t say those words to him. They would only make it worse for them. She had to leave. She had to face Christopher.

Jonathan took a deep breath, swallowing hard. He needed to be strong for her, yet right now it was so difficult. He pulled back looking into her eyes. He could read them so easily, he knew exactly what she was feeling and he was feeling it too.

“It’s ok, baby. We’ll be together again soon. I’ll call you tonight, all right? We’ll speak every single day while you deal with what you need to, and I’ll be there the second you tell me to. The second you are ready I’ll be there. I promise.”

She nodded, wiped her cheeks, and forced herself to smile at him. Yet the tears kept running inside her. Leaning in, she wrapped her arms around him, and nuzzled the curve of his neck, all the way up until she got his ear. She inhaled his scent and her heart tore a bit more. She kissed his skin softly, and pulled back, trying her best not show the pain she was feeling in her eyes.

She smiled. “One for the road.”

He returned her smile, looking into her eyes. “I love you, Sam. I always have, and forever will,” he said, and crushed his lips to hers, claiming them one last time and holding her tight in his arms. When he finally pulled his lips from hers, he cradled her face with his hands, placed his lips on her forehead, and closed his eyes. A tear escaped him, while he tried desperately to shut the voice in the back of his mind. The voice that told him he wouldn’t see her again. That their time had passed, and it was over for them. Taking another breath, he concentrated on the love he had felt from her, and gave her two small kisses.

“I love you, Jonathan,” she whispered, looking up at him one last time and getting out of his arms.

Jonathan’s body tensed, the feeling of her puling out of his embrace almost bringing him to his knees.

Samantha turned away from him, and began walking towards the gate, forcing herself not to look back. Every step she took, ripped into her so viciously that she could barely breathe. She knew she had to do this, but she also knew it could very well tear her apart all over again.

Jonathan stood right there where she had left him, watching her walk away from him. His heart tore at the sight. It was almost as painful as when she ran away from him five years ago. Yet he knew he loved her now, and she loved him.

“We will be together again, Sam. I promise, I’m not letting you go,” Jonathan vowed, as Samantha disappeared from his view. He let out a ragged breath placing his hand in his pocket, and holding her Mother’s ring tightly in his hand.

He turned around, and began to walk away.
