  Chapter 1

Annie paced nervously up and down the hall. She looked at her watch again and then back to the wall. She glanced at her fingernails. They were clean, well manicured, and professional. She raised her hand to her mouth to chew on the little bit of growth that was there and she stopped herself. She hadn’t chewed her nails in years and this Mr. Rossen guy didn’t need to see her with raggedy, chewed-up fingernails. It was bad enough she didn’t think her deodorant was going to hold up. She ran her fingers through her hair and chuckled to herself. That’s all she needed, bloody cuticles and sweat stained armpits. Not a good first impression for a professional actress. She needed to calm down. And fast. She had been to hundreds of auditions and she reminded herself that this was just another audition like all the rest….even though it wasn’t. This one was big. It was fucking huge.

All throughout the wide expanse of plush carpet and art deco design were dozens of girls that were more similar to Annie than not. Every one of these beautiful young women was trying out for the same part. If she hadn’t already been nervous, she would have been downright terrified.

“Hello, ma’am? Miss?” The high-pitched voice came from the obviously gay man standing in the doorway; hand on his hip, looking straight at Annie. His tight, black leather jeans showed off his junk, and his light blue sequined t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up showed his smooth, dark muscled arms. His black hair was perfectly gelled in a faux-hawk and his shoes, well, his shoes were black Harley boots. And he was hot. Why are all the gay men so hot? “You’re up, sweetie,” he winked.

Her heart started to pound. She smiled a thank you and ducked into the room. As she walked in, she felt dwarfed in the large open space containing a cluttered desk and a long table. Stacks of résumés and headshots were spread out all across the table in a haphazard fashion. But, it wasn’t the table that drew her attention. It was the gorgeous man sitting behind the desk. Annie had been to hundreds of these open auditions and she had never seen anyone as yummy as the man who sat in front of her right now. Please, deodorant, don’t fail me now. Breathe.

He looked to be in his early 30’s, with a chiseled jaw and piercing grey eyes. Even though her heart was pounding, and her palms were sweaty she smiled her brightest smile. “Mr. Rossen,” she said. “I’m Annabelle, Annabelle Gibbons. I’ll be -” He didn’t even look up, and her voice faltered a little. “I’ll be trying out for the part of Kate.”

He glanced up, his gaze scanning her body quickly up and down and finally; he looked straight into her eyes. “Obviously,” his voice had a trace of European accent - German maybe, Polish? He looked back down at the papers before him. “So? Begin.”

She swallowed hard. She expected a little more questioning or at least politeness before she began. Apparently Mr. High-and-Mighty had more important things to do than to actually consider her for the part. She scowled and took a deep breath, calming herself. She’d show him. She’d give him the best reading of his life.

Straightening her back, she launched into the reading, giving it her all. She wasn’t just reading Kate, she was Kate. When she finished, slightly out of breath from the emotions of the part, she stood in front of him, panting. His hand idly reached out to grab her résumé off of one stack, slipping it into another.

“Thank you for coming in,” he said, his voice sounding bored. “Tell Daveed to send in the next girl.”

Annie stood appalled, feeling cheated. “Mr. Rossen!” she exclaimed, finding her voice.

At last, he glanced up, his piercing eyes meeting hers. “Yes?”

“I may not have the best résumé, and I might not be the most beautiful or most sexy woman trying out for this part, but I demand your respect and attention. I am perfect for this part, and I am not walking out of here until you watch me do this audition!” She exhaled.

One of his eyebrows rose slightly, but she didn’t wait for his response. While she had his attention, she launched back into the reading, throwing all of her fire and frustration into it. When she finished, she nodded, “Thank you for your time, Mr. Rossen,” turning to leave.

“Yes, thank you. We’ll be in touch,” he said, slipping her file into a different pile. Feeling triumphant, and a little surprised at herself, she stormed out of the room and into the hallway, slamming into Daveed. Her purse and portfolio crashed to the floor, the contents spilling out across the foyer. “I’m so sorry,” she looked at him, hurriedly putting her things back in her purse; He grabbed her portfolio and handed it to her. “Hey, no problem, I know he can be pretty brutal sometimes.” She smiled a weak smile, taking her things from his hand. “Thanks.” Tears welling up in her eyes.

He turned to yell to whoever was listening. “Gertie, I’m gonna take my lunch, be back in an hour!”

“Sweetie, you need a hug. Let’s go over here to Starbucks and get a mocha frappuccino. Frappuccino can cure anything. I know Vic can be a royal bitch sometimes, but girl, have you seen that ass?”

Annie was shocked, who was this guy and was Mr. Rossen gay? Is that why he acted like that? “Uhm…..sure. Hi, I’m Annie.” Sticking out her hand.

“Girl, I know who you are, I checked you in… and if you’re wondering, yes, I’m gay and no, Vic is not.”

  “Vic?”

“Mr. Rossen, I work for him. Well, Gertie and I work for him; he’s way too much man for one assistant, so we take turns. I tell you what, sweet cheeks, if we swung for the same team, I promise you I’d be his wife!” He giggled, slapping his thigh. “By the way, I’m Daveed,” rolling his eyes. “It’s Mexican, don’t ask,” throwing his palm up in the air.

Laughing a little, “Well, after that audition, I don’t think anyone listens to me either!” she took a sip of her frappuccino, calming down. Daveed was yapping about how Gertie had been trying to get in Mr. Rossen’s pants and almost got fired and about some Hollywood rumors, while Annie just smiled and sipped, taking it all in. He seemed to know a lot about Hollywood. Wonder just how much clout he has?

  “Well, Daveed, I h
ave really enjoyed chatting with you, but I do have to run off to work. Here’s my number if you ever want to meet for a frappuccino, next time, my treat!” smiling as she quickly scribbled her number on a napkin, handing it to him and hurrying to her car. She couldn’t be late for work, not today anyway. Wall Street was having a dinner party at the restaurant she worked at and that meant huge tips. She loved it when rich men were generous with their tips. It kept up her rent in an upscale neighborhood, not that she didn’t make great money, the restaurant paid her well, but the added tips were a huge bonus. Sometimes she needed a little extra…for girlie things.

It was only after she reached her car that her incredible stupidity hit her. Shit! She couldn’t believe she went off on that guy. This was an awesome part in a real movie. He was sure to write her off as crazy now. Giggling to herself, she thought, Oh well I fucked that one up. She drove off to change into her uniform, and go back to her predictable, boring life.

  Chapter 2

After going bat-shit crazy at the audition, the last thing she expected was the phone call that came the very next morning. The Wall Street dinner party was a hit and she made over a thousand dollars in tips. Not bad for one night. Unfortunately, she didn’t get home till after two so when the phone rang at six thirty in the morning, she wasn’t in the best of moods.

  “Hell – “

“Annabelle Gibbons, rise and shine! It’s a great day to –“

“Who is this?” She choked, her head pounding from lack of sleep.

“Girl, don’t tell me you already forgot about me? It’s Daveed, your favorite queen! You hurt me, girl, you really hurt me.” He whined.

“Oh, sorry, what time is it? Why are you up at this hour?”

“Vic, I mean Mr. Rossen, told me to set up a lunch appointment with you today so he could discuss a few details about that part you wanted in the new Carole Stimson movie, you game, girl? You better be!”

Annie’s first response was to say ‘Seriously?’, but she bit her tongue and managed to croak out a “Sure, that would be great.”

“Excellent. Sin Devicio’s, on Alameda - you know the place? He wants you there at noon sharp.”

“Okay Daveed, I’ll be there, but this better be worth it.”

“Oh, sweet cheeks, he’s ALWAYS worth it. God, if he invited me to lunch at Sin Devicio’s, I’d be so fuckin’ happy, I’d cream my jeans. Oops! Sorry! TMI, gotta go! Don’t forget, noon sharp.”

Hanging up the phone, she jumped out of bed and throwing her fists up in the air, she let out a yell, dancing around in her cami and panties, she danced into the kitchen and put some coffee on. She was going to need it. Lots of it. She had to wow him or she may never get this part. Good thing she was off work tonight or she would never get any sleep.

Annie sucked on her bottom lip. What to do? What to wear? Sin Devicio’s was one of the best restaurants on Restaurant Row, the most expensive restaurant districts in the city. She would never have been able to afford to eat there on her own. Even if he was just going to tell her to come to call-backs, or to discuss what she had done wrong, she didn’t care. Just eating at Sin Devicio’s would be worth it.

Pulling out her phone, she texted Daveed.

  ‘What’s his fav color?’

After a few minutes when she didn’t hear back from him, she opened her closet to figure out what she was going to wear. She had to be sexy, but not too slutty. Something shockingly wonderful, and respectable. Nothing black, this was a lunch date. Something colorful, but subtle. She settled on a royal blue dress with a princess neckline. The royal blue would accentuate her bright blue eyes and lightly tanned décolleté. And the princess neckline, well… it would accentuate the girls.

There were still a few hours before the lunch date and she didn’t want to get dressed too early, or end up arriving late. Sipping her coffee, she wondered what the meeting was about. Was she hired? Did they want another audition? This could be her big break, her dream come true! Her heart was racing and she knew she better slow down and relax.

Flopping down on her bed, she set her alarm for 9:30; just a little more sleep and she could handle the day. Last night was a bear and she sure as hell didn’t want to show up for lunch with bags under her eyes looking like death warmed over. Her outfit was ready, so all she needed to do was shower, get dressed and go. She drifted off to sleep just as the birds started chirping the day awake. Just a couple more hours….

She jumped up when she heard her phone beep. Sleepily reaching for it, rubbing her eyes, complaining to herself how no one ever lets her sleep. “Oh shit!” she jumped up and ran into the bathroom and started the water. “Damn alarm, why didn’t you wake me?” she hollered and hurriedly jumped into the shower, Shit! She clipped her long brown hair on top of her head and grabbed the razor, quickly shaving her legs; the snatch would have to wait. No one was going to see it anyway. She only had forty-five minutes to transform herself into a goddess and get to Sin Devicio’s.

She had to, and she was going to make it even if it killed her.

  Chapter 3

She arrived at Sin Devicio’s with only a few moments to spare. In her royal blue dress and spiked heels, she looked and felt amazing. He would definitely notice her. The princess neckline accented her breasts perfectly and with the help of a push up demi bra, the girls were front and center. Her long brown hair was pulled back into a messy bun with tendrils framing her face and neck. Annie had the kind of hair that said ‘Fuck me.’ Long, thick, pullable and fuckable. She could do just about anything with it, up, down, straight, curly. God had blessed her with a great ass and really great hair.

She was trembling with excitement as she stood waiting to be led to the table which had been reserved for Mr. Rossen. He wasn’t there yet. Nervously, she took a seat, accepted water from the waiter, and leafed through the menu, mostly because she didn’t know what else to do.

As the minutes ticked by, she was starting to wonder if he forgot about her. All this rushing around, and the SOB wasn’t even there. She checked her phone, wondering if he had called, found a reply text from Daveed ‘blue honey, work it’. She replied, ‘thx, where is he?’ but there was nothing else. No more messages or voice mails. The waiter returned, asking her if she wanted any refills of water or an appetizer. She thought about the tips she made at work the night before and ordered a drink. Without those tips, she wouldn’t have been able to afford this restaurant at all.

As the time passed on, she was starting to get annoyed. He’s the one who said noon sharp, it was almost one o’clock and he still wasn’t there. She contemplated leaving, and thought fifteen more minutes, I’m out of here. She had the day off and had tons of errands to run and stuff to get done. She only got one day off a week. She sure didn’t want to spend it in a fancy restaurant waiting for some jerk who needed a watch.

Just as she was about to leave, Mr. Rossen breezed through the door to the table. She had to catch her breath. He was taller than she had expected, and the expensive suit that he wore showed off every single beautiful inch. When he sat, the waiter was instantly there with the menus. Mr. Rossen didn’t bother to ask Annie if she wanted anything to eat. He ordered for them both, and then smiled at Annie, showing off his pearly white teeth.

“Annabelle, er - , Annie, right?”

She nodded yes, sipping on her martini.

“I’m so glad you could come today. Daveed got you all squared away with details, I presume.”

  She smiled and nodded.

For a moment Annie was thrown. She was a southern girl, and she always expected people to be polite. He was anything but. She couldn’t believe that he hadn’t even pretended to apologize for the wait. She also couldn’t believe that she was here at this restaurant, so she was willing to let it go, now if her heart would stop pounding, she might be able to enjoy his company. “Oh, of course. I – I can’t believe that you are really considering me, Mr. Rossen. It – it’s an honor.” She s
tumbled on her words. What is happening to me? Why am I so nervous? This guy was over an hour late. You got this girl. Breathe.

  “Please, call me Vic.”

“Oh,” Annie said, blushing. “I couldn’t.”

He watched her across the table, his eyes traveling up and down her body again. “I insist.”

Not knowing what to say to that, she took a sip of her drink instead, praying her nerves would calm down if only for a minute. At least from the expression on his face, he seemed to be enjoying the princess neckline and makeup that Annie had put on. She put her glass down and smiled, ready to ask about the part, but he was already speaking.

“Now, I understand that this part would be a very big deal for you.”

“Yes, sir” Annie said, leaning forward excitedly. “It would be my breakout role. It would totally make my career.”

His eyes were wandering across her shoulders and down her chest. “Yes, I would imagine. Now, I hope you understand, we had originally thought to cast Miss Alba or Miss Katherine Zeta Jones for this part.”

Annie paled. There was no way in hell that she could compete with beautiful, famous actresses like that. Why did he even want to meet with her? She nodded numbly, taking another sip of her martini. She had no chance at all.

Vicktor leaned forward, his eyes looking sexy as hell as he held her gaze. “Now, I like you. I thought you did a very passionate reading. I’m just having a hard time convincing the director and producer that you are the perfect actress for the lead role. I’m sure you understand.”

She nodded, although she wasn’t completely sure that she understood.

“It can be very exhausting trying to convince a director to change their mind; it’s actually very tiring and a bit boring”

Confusion swept across Annie’s face. “Okaaaay?”
