“Did I wake you up?”
“Of course you woke me up.” I throw an arm over my forehead. “It’s five in the morning.”
“It’s six. You’re about to be late on your first day.”
I roll over and check the clock. Well, he’s right. I’ll give him that. But I still don’t need to be up right now. I could and should still be sleeping.
“I’m not going to be late, Dad. I’m twenty-five years old. You don’t have to treat me like I’m fifteen.”
“Son, this isn’t New York City. There’s no on-time train to catch to get you there at the last second. You have to get yourself there on time.”
After I sigh, I tell him, “And I will.”
“You won’t at this rate because you have to stop on the way to pick up breakfast and coffee to make the right impression on your coworkers.”
I roll my eyes. “Seriously? It’s not enough that I’ll be wearing a tie with my suit?”
It’s his turn to sigh. “This is exactly why I had to pull strings for you to get a job.”
“Whoa,” immediately comes out of my mouth. “I didn’t ask you to pull strings, and I was fully capable of getting a job. It just wasn’t up to your standards.”
“My standards will make you successful, son. That’s what you need right now. Something good to focus on now that you’re back home and ready to make something of yourself.” After a short beat of silence, he adds, “And I’m sure you didn’t remember to get a haircut…”
This conversation is going nowhere. It’s the same one we’ve had since I moved home. Never mind that I had enough money saved up from my last job to get here, rent a place, and spend a month looking for work. None of that matters as much to him as a son with a “successful” job. And this conversation will never end if I don’t make it stop. So I take a deep breath, blow it out, and concede. Like I always do. It’s easier than fighting.
“You’re right, Dad. Where should I stop to get coffee?”
~~~
Maybe, if I’d gotten laid just once in the last month, I wouldn’t be so grumpy right now. But I’m fucking grumpy. I’m headed to a coffee shop so I can pick up coffee and pastries for people I don’t even know. People who work for a company I don’t give two shits about. And I have to do a job I don’t give even one shit about.
Okay, that’s just me being grumpy about my dad and his meddling. They’re probably perfectly nice people who work at a perfectly nice place I don’t want to work at. That’s all. Hopefully this coffee shop has good coffee. And won’t screw my order up. I could fucking use it right now.
I pull my car—the one I was able to buy by myself when I moved back home—up in front of The Steam Room. When I get out, I adjust my stupid tie. I can’t believe I have a job where I have to wear a tie. In fact, why were ties even invented? And why are they still a thing now?
Good god. I need to calm down. This is only day one of the rest of my dull, boring existence. I better get used to it now while I can.
When I open the door, the smell of something sweet baking in the oven hits me first. Then the rich scent of brewing coffee overrides it. Maybe today won’t be so bad after all. Coffee is always the answer. And a good pastry never hurts.
“Thanks. We’ll catch up soon, okay?” a woman with short, black hair says. Then she walks past me on her way to the door, giving me a weird nod, which I catch when I glance up at her.
That throws me off as I reach into my back pocket for wallet. I fumble for it, and when I’ve finally retrieved it, it slips out of my hands and lands with a thunk on the tile. Goddammit. It’s way too early for this shit. Could this day get any worse?
