Kingsley was very moved.
‘Shannon told me you did not go.’
‘And you believed him?’
‘Well…’
‘I cannot credit that you believed that man! He was obviously an utter cad. I knew it the first moment I saw him.’
‘But you received him again, more than once. He visited you.’
‘He may have visited me but I did not receive him. He came to my door but he was informed that I was out. I know his sort.’
Once more Kingsley was reminded of just how much he loved his wife. Her intuition was faultless.
‘Agnes,’ he said, ‘will you marry me?’
‘Yes.’
Once more they embraced and this time she did not break away. Instead she took Kingsley’s hand and led him towards the stairs.
‘Most improper before our wedding night,’ she said as they stumbled together into their bedroom.
After they had made love, Kingsley went into George’s room and stared awhile at the dear face of his sleeping son. When he returned to the bedroom, Agnes was sitting at her dressing table, looking thoughtful.
‘This Nurse Murray,’ she said, with just the faintest hint of acid in her tone. ‘She figures rather prominently in your story, doesn’t she? ‘
‘Nurse Murray? Oh…she was a fine young woman, a…a great help in the investigation.’
‘Really?’ Agnes replied, and there was a wealth of meaning in that single word.
As Kingsley endeavoured to change the subject, he could not help wondering whether Agnes’s intuition might be just a little too faultless.
