Anna smiled slowly. ‘Mmm, I think I’d like that. Where shall we go?’
‘Somewhere exotic and hot where all you have to do is lie around all day and be deliciously lazy.’
‘I can’t imagine myself ever being lazy,’ she murmured.
They had moved house before Peter was born and although Mrs Green did all she could Anna really liked doing most things herself.
She loved looking after her darling baby and her gorgeous husband. She went cold every time she thought about how near she had come to losing him. And of course she loved her new house.
When Peter was ten months old they’d added an annexe to the cottage—Rosemary was coming to live with them!
Oliver’s mother had changed. Her fright with the police and Oliver’s unexpected generosity had made her do a lot of hard thinking. And today she was a gracious lady who had finally accepted that there was more to life than money.
‘Do you know where I’d like to go?’ Anna said, stroking Oliver’s cheek, feeling the early morning rasp of a much needed shave.
‘The world’s your oyster, my darling. Just name it.’
‘To Dawn’s cottage. We were so happy there, Oliver. It would be a perfect place for a honeymoon. And now your mother’s here, I’m sure she’ll help Mrs Green look after Peter.’
‘I think you’re right,’ he said. ‘She’s really taken to the little guy. She says he reminds her of me at his age. I don’t think she wants to miss out on his childhood the way she did mine.’
‘So it’s settled?’ she asked, eyes shining.
‘If that’s what you really want?’
‘I do, more than anything in the world. And Oliver, thank you for loving me.’
‘Oh, no,’ he said quickly, ‘it’s me who has to thank you for giving me a second chance. And it has worked out, hasn’t it?’
Anna nodded. ‘Better than I ever expected. I’m the happiest woman in the world.’
‘And I,’ he said with the widest grin imaginable, ‘am the happiest man.’
