“I told myself that I wouldn’t marry and start a family until my accomplishments as an engineer made me nationally known. That was an easy vow to keep until I fell in love with you.” Chills raced through her body. Was he calling it off? “I’ve been selfish, thinking only of myself. I want what you want.
“I know you want children, my children, and I want you to be the mother of my sons and daughters. These last weeks have been terrible ones for me, as I know they have been for you.”
He released her hand and knelt on one knee. “Will you forgive my stubbornness and be my wife? I love you, and I will cherish you and our children for as long as I live.”
She slipped to her knees and cupped his face with her hands as tears streamed down her cheeks. “Yes. Oh, yes. I want to be your wife, and I want you to be my husband. I have never loved any man but you.”
Tears glistened unshed in his eyes. “Will you spend Christmas at Harrington House with me and my family?” She nodded, unable to speak, for the joy she felt overwhelmed her. “How soon can we get married?” he asked.
She threw her arms around him and hugged him. “Depends on what I can negotiate with my mother. If I get Velma to plan the wedding, we can probably marry on Valentine’s Day.”
He frowned. “That’s years away, but our house won’t be ready till late spring or early summer.” He gazed into her eyes, a smile glowing on his face. “You’re really going to marry me?”
“It’s what I’ve wanted for months.”
“How’re you going to work in Baltimore if we live in Eagle Park?” he wanted to know.
“Not to worry. I’ll get my job description changed.”
“You wouldn’t believe how much I love you. Kiss me, woman.”
Hours later, he pulled her sated body to his, and with one hand cupping her breast and the other on her belly, he kissed the back of her neck, and they dozed off to sleep.
