“Thanks, Maker.”
I shivered.
“For our opening match, I would like to thank our first challenger…” the crowd hushed, and Asterion let the pressure build for a few tense moments. “Nate Temple!”
I blinked. “WHAT?” But my voice was drowned out by the crazed outburst of cheers.
I found Kane forcibly shoving me out of my seat and down to the ring, with a dozen hands assisting him, so that it was either be thrown into the ring like a spoiled child, or maintain some dignity and do it myself. I saw Achilles lingering on the other side of the ring, grinning. “Great,” I muttered to myself stepping into the ring. Give a guy a fight club and he still wants to clobber you for breaking a freaking door.
I saw another figure standing beside Achilles and my jaw dropped. It was Indie, and she looked sad, guilty, heartbroken. But not at what was about to happen. It was as if we had an entire private conversation in that look. About her leaving. She promised she would be back. And I told her I loved her. The smile that crept over her face made it all worth it. She mouthed, someday soon, my love…
“And his challenger…” The crowd began patting Achilles on the back, but he was no longer smiling. In fact, he looked to be shooting me a warning look, but not about himself. “Ichabod Temple!”
The crowd silenced instantly, people staring about in confusion as a tall figure entered the ring from behind Indie. Everyone had known I was the last Temple. But now they were discovering otherwise. My opponent’s face was cold, passionless. Indie dropped her head sadly, stepping out of his way.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I muttered, unleashing whips of fire and ice to either side of me as rage settled over my shoulders. I felt the cool cane at my hip, but decided against drawing it. The whips must have licked a few feet beside me because shouts of alarm and pain jumped out and I found myself suddenly surrounded by no one. I shifted the whips to growing balls of fire, attached to each other by cords of fire like two wads of sticky gum. I did this without realizing it, but hid my surprise well.
“It takes balls to come against me.” I glanced down. “Great big glowing balls. Bring it on, old man,” I snarled.
Even though we were too far apart to hear each other, I heard his response clearly.
“Glad to, child.”
“FIGHT!” Asterion bellowed and the crowd went wild as we raced towards each other, magic flying everywhere like the Apocalypse had just been set off.
And I quickly realized just how much I had left to learn about being a Maker…
