Epilogue
Nate stood on the balcony of the secluded cabana he and Charlotte had disappeared to for their honeymoon. As he looked out over the ocean, he knew that he’d finally found the deep, abiding peace and belonging that he’d always been missing and never knew why. He was still looking forward to refurbishing downtown Chester, even Betsy’s Cut and Curl—plus a lot of other ambitious plans for his hometown. It would give him something to keep him occupied and engaged with the community, but most of his time would be focused on building a life with his amazing wife.
Charlotte came up behind him then, and wrapped her arms around his waist. He turned and pulled her to him, never satisfied unless she was within kissing distance. But before he could take advantage of moment, his phone beeped.
“Nate, why is your phone on?” Charlotte asked, her voice teasing but full of accusation. “We made a deal.”
“I just had it because we’re leaving for dinner. You wanted to have a video call with Taylor, right? My screen is bigger than yours.” He looked at his phone. “It’s an email from Sam. Can I skim it really quick, and make sure it’s nothing important?”
Charlotte smiled oddly, like she knew something he didn’t. “Go ahead. Just this once.”
Keeping his arm around her, he opened the email and started reading a contract. Strange clauses about Valentine’s Day and anniversaries swam before him, as well birthdays and Christmas.
“What is this? Has Sam finally flipped? Wait…is this…? Charlotte, is this a contract for what I can spend on you for presents?”
“That’s just the first few pages. I still have to draft the rest, but I think it might get a little too personal to get Sam involved in it. It has to do with precisely how you can keep me happy and how often I’ll require it.”
Nate roared with laughter. “Oh yeah? And what do I get out of this deal? You know, contracts will only hold up in court if they are mutually beneficial and if you aren’t unduly influencing me again.”
Charlotte ran her finger up his chest. “Oh, I intend to unduly influence you. But after the last few days, I’m pretty sure you’ll like the terms.”
With his eyes blazing, Nate stepped back a bit, hoping to convince her that dinner could wait a little while. Then he looked down and saw Charlotte’s t-shirt. “What the heck are you wearing?”
“What? I figured if everyone else in town was going to wear a memorial t-shirt for my husband, I should wear one too. Don’t you think?”
Growling, Nate picked her up and tossed her over his shoulder. “Come on. I’m taking that off you right this second.”
“Of course you are. Good excuse, honey. I thought I was finally going to get out of this cabana.”
“Well, think again, Mrs. Haverton.”
