All the times he had spent with her, even when thinking she was a guy, how could he have missed that love shining in her eyes?
"Oh, Chris," Callie kept babbling, unaware of the changes overcoming him, "I really am sorry. God you have no idea. I don't want you to hate me, I don't want us to be apart." She grabbed his wrists and held on tight. "Please, please, just give me another chance."
Chris sighed. "Cal-"
"I promise to lose more weight," Callie continued.
"Cal-"
"And I won't wear that purple pajama anymore...and no more pizza-"
"No more pizza!" Chris cried with mock shock, "you trying to kill yourself?"
Callie ignored him. "And I promise to be more sociable. I-I can be like Sarah and Hannah. I can wear dresses, no sweats and-"
Chris kissed her. It seemed to be the only way to shut her up. Eyes wide open, Callie stared at him as he pressed his warm lips against hers. Heart fluttering like a butterfly, it was all she could do from melting into his arms.
Chris pulled back and stared into her eyes. "Cal, I don't want you to change. Not one bit. You may have lied about your gender before but...it's your personality I fell for." He brushed her curls back. "Don't change yourself for me. I should be the one apologizing."
Callie opened her mouth but nothing came out.
"I'm sorry," Chris said. "I'm sorry for mistaking you for a guy, and I'm sorry for everything I put you through. I can't believe I set you up with Susan." He chuckled.
Callie stared at him. She couldn't believe what he was saying, that he was apologizing.
Chris pressed his forehead against hers again and closed his eyes. "I'm not a prince charming, Cal. I'm a regular guy who makes mistakes and I make many. Most of them were with you."
He opened his eyes and stared down at her. "I'm sorry for that. I came here to get you back."
"Really?" Callie asked in a tiny whisper.
He nodded. "When I thought you were going to marry someone else...let's just say I'm tired of running around in circles. No more lies from here on. No more hiding anything from each other. Let's start over Cal...Callie."
"Brenda?"
"She's history. Before I left I made sure that she knew that we are over."
It's happening, Callie thought. This was all really happening. Chris-Chris was giving her another chance. He was taking her back. They were going to be together. Forever.
She let him pull her up from the ground, both of them standing and still staring into each other's eyes. The warmth and love she saw there made her eyes sting with tears again. Oh God, there was a moment when she thought she'd never see him look at her like that anymore.
"My future is with you," Chris smiled. "I know that. I think I've always known. I'm just sorry that I made you wait...that I hurt you."
"I hurt you too," Callie replied.
Chris laced his fingers with hers. "Then let's vow not to hurt each other like that again. Deal?"
Callie smiled. "Deal."
"And I don't want to see you on your knees like that again. You're more than that Cal. You shouldn't have to beg like that."
"O-okay."
They stood there, tightly holding each other's hands, wondering what to do next. Suddenly, they were both shy. After all that heart to heart the tension between them dissolved into something else. A warm buttery feeling of new love.
Hesitant, Callie lifted up a hand and caressed his cheek, familiarising herself with the touch of his skin, with the features of his face. Engraving this moment in her heart. She felt so much love for him that she didn't know what to do with herself.
As for Chris, he felt the same way. It seemed like there should be so many things he should be saying to her to declare his love but there didn't seem to be any right words to describe what she made him feel. No words.
So he touched her. Her soft curls, her warm cheeks, even her mouth. With his thumb, he softly traced the bottom of her full lip. They were soft and pink like flower petals. And suddenly, just like that, he wanted to be alone with her. Wanted to show her not with words but with his body just how much he craved her. How much he couldn't get enough of her.
"Come with me," he whispered.
Callie stared at him, trust and love shining in her eyes. "Anywhere."
Chris smiled.
The End?
