When I finally looked up I didn't see Dax anymore. A chill had spread out along my skin as I finally confronted what he had said. “How do you know all of this?” I asked, looking for him by the grave he was no longer kneeling by.
Then I heard a low growl a foot behind me.
“Dax?” My voice was soft as I sensed the beast right behind me. I had to be crazy for even thinking the thoughts in my head. I was afraid to turn around and see him with my own eyes.
Then a wet tongue ran up the back of my neck, exactly how it had that first time I’d come in contact with one.
Dax was right. I did understand. I didn’t have to leave here because I wasn’t the only thing the Dark Walkers were hunting in this place.
They wanted a beast that could turn human.
They wanted Dax.
