“Well, he seems happy about something.” She watched Percy cross the street and knew he was headed to see her. She sat down on the edge of the bed, grabbing her hairbrush on the way. Slowly, she began to work the tangles from the ends of her hair. She attempted to brush out the back of her head, but lifting her arms up was too painful.
When the bedroom door opened a few minutes later, she gave no indication that she was aware of his arrival. She just kept brushing the same piece of hair over and over. She could feel Percy looking at her, and she didn’t acknowledge him until he walked over and took the brush from her hands.
“Let me do that for you,” he murmured, sitting beside her on the bed and pushing on her shoulder to turn her. Her sharp inhale of pain merely had him murmuring, “You could have saved yourself so much pain if you’d only been reasonable.”
Brianna felt tears fill her eyes. His actions were gentle and almost tender, but his words were heartless and showed her the true character of the man she’d just agreed to legally marry. She sat still while he worked the tangles from her hair, lost in her own thoughts and recriminations for not having been stronger.
Soon, Percy finished with her hair and he wrapped his arms around her shoulders, placing a kiss on her head. “I can’t wait for tonight.” He released her and then quietly left the room.
Brianna managed to hold back her reaction to his words until the door closed, but then tears flowed freely down her cheeks. She had not misconstrued his meaning and knew that any reprieve she’d thought to get would end with the setting sun. She had a few hours to find a way out of this mess or her fate would be sealed and she’d never be able to get away from Percy.
With a renewed sense of self-preservation driving her, Brianna knew the only option she had was to get out of Percy’s Crossing and somehow make her way to the next town. It would take her several days to get there, and her chances for getting there alive were slim, but she’d rather die alone in the wilderness than live as Percy’s prisoner.
Brianna found a spare sheet in the chest at the bottom of the bed and tore it into strips. She used those to bind her ribs, wrapping the fabric tightly so that she could still breathe, but normal movements didn’t send stabbing pain through her body. She put on her most sensible pair of shoes and then tucked an extra change of clothing into a satchel she could wear across her body.
She knew from her time here with her father that right after supper everyone would be absent or busy. Charlie and his goons would head to the saloon. The kitchen staff would be busy preparing for the next day’s meals and no one would be expecting their unwilling houseguest to slip out the back door. Brianna had one chance to leave Percy’s house and slip away from the town. Now, all she had to do was wait.
