  “Starlight Audio Magic” is inspired by Michael J. Malone, founder of Audio Environments, Inc. (now DMX), a Seattle-based company that pioneered the concept of providing “foreground music” to businesses such as retail stores and restaurants. Founded as a competitor of Muzak, AEI became very good at influencing customers’ moods and energy levels by tailoring the tempo and mood of the music that they hear while shopping or dining.

  Candice Bergen really did go out on a date with Henry Kissinger, although I have changed the timing and circumstances a bit. As we saw in FOREST OF THE MIND, she also dated Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day) and lived for a short time in the house where the Manson Family would later murder Sharon Tate and four others.

  Richard Nixon was an accomplished pianist. It’s not clear whether Nixon knew how to play any Jerry Lee Lewis songs.

  If you’ve flown through Denver International Airport, you may have recognized some of the works of art referenced in this book. Although the airport opened in 1994, clearly its designers were aware of what Nathaniel did on that site back in the early 1970s.

  Weasel coffee is a real thing.
