  He walks toward me, slow, deliberate steps, his boots clipping the metal floor.

  Velkan tenses, and I lay a restraining hand on his arm while keeping a close eye on the plasma gun in the soldier’s hand.

  He comes to a halt directly in front of me and holds out a small leather pouch.

  I eye it suspiciously, a disturbing image of a bloodied finger flashing before my eyes. “What’s this?”

  “Open it,” he insists, pressing it into my hand.

  I tug the cord securing the neck of the pouch, tip the contents into the palm of my hand, and suck in a silent breath. A perfect match to the other three.

  “Whatever mission you’re on,” Phin says. “I’m a part of it too.”
