A Hard-Hearted Hero (Harlequin Temptation) Page 17

by Pamela Burford

“You don’t say.” He tidied up and straightened their clothing, his heart still pounding like a jackhammer. “Have to give that a try sometime.”

She turned in his arms and they clung to each other for a shaky kiss. She said, “We were a little loud. What’ll the neighbors think?”

“This is New York. They’ll think I was mugging you.”

  “Rhythmically?”

He wagged his eyebrows and kissed her again. She snuggled against him as he draped an arm over her shoulder, and together they began to stagger back toward the house.

She said, “You kept your promise. Thanks.”

  “My promise?”

“To protect me the next time we made love, remember?”

“Oh, that. No problem, sweetheart. I laid in four dozen of the damn things.”

  Her eyebrows shot up.

He said, “We’re well stocked with all the essential ingredients of a proper reunion. Trojans. Rémy Martin. Friskies Buffet.”

“You’ll have to go out again. I prefer my Friskies Buffet on lightly buttered toast points.”

“Guess I should’ve gone grocery shopping, huh?”

  “Phone connected?”

  “Of course.”

“All is not lost. Pizza or Chinese?”

“Let’s order Chinese. I have this fantasy about feeding you lo mein in bed.”

  “What bed?”

“Oh yeah. Well, the way I figure it, we can work up to this bed thing in stages. Next step—sleeping bag.”

  “Does it fit two?”

He held the door open for her. “We’ll find out.”
