The team dished out compliments to one another about the mission for the next ten minutes before dismissing. Everyone stood and started to file out of the room.
“Hawk, if you’ve got a minute, I want to speak with you,” Blunt said.
Hawk nodded and stopped as everyone else cleared out. He walked back over toward Blunt, who hadn’t moved from his seat at the head of the table.
“What is it, boss?” Hawk asked.
Lines creased Blunt’s forehead as he swallowed hard before answering. “I didn’t want to tell you this in front of everyone and ruin the celebratory moment that we all needed, but there’s something you need to know.”
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s your mother,” Blunt said. “They found her this morning dead on her front porch.”
“What? How?”
“I could scarcely believe it myself when I first heard,” Blunt said. “You know how much of a saint I thought she was.”
Hawk still stared slack-jawed. “I thought nobody knew where she lived.”
“Apparently, someone found out and stabbed her to death in her bed and then dragged her body onto the front steps. Then the killer left a message in her blood on the front porch.”
Tears streamed down Hawk’s face as he slumped into a chair and sobbed quietly. After a couple of minutes, he composed himself and stood up. He felt his face flush red with rage.
Setting his jaw and narrowing his eyes, Hawk stared with a steely gaze at Blunt. “What was the message?”
“The note was: ‘Tell Brady he’s next.’”
“Bastards,” Hawk said. “Someone’s gonna pay.”
“They sure are,” Blunt said. “They sure are.”
