Paige rolled to her side and nestled into me, panting right along with me. She said nothing more. Soon, her breathing settled and her eyes closed. I was so relaxed that instead of getting up to find my clothes and leave, I let my eyes close for a few minutes.
Chapter Thirteen
Angelo
Paige was still asleep when I woke up. There was a first time for everything. Falling asleep at a woman’s place, well, that had not happened before. I checked the clock on her nightstand.
Fuck.
I didn’t just fall asleep here, I’d spent the entire night, and it was now close to seven in the morning. I needed to get out of here, stat. Grabbing my things, I got dressed and left her bedroom.
My phone buzzed in my pocket just as I closed her bedroom door behind me. It was Dominic.
“Hey Dom,” I answered. “What’s up?”
“You tell me.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m just heading home. Do you want to talk in, say half-hour?”
“No. I want to talk now,” he said.
“Fine.” I could tell he meant business from his dark and menacing tone. “What’s up? And don’t make me guess. It’s too early for these games.”
“Tell me something. Why are you playing with fire?”
“Jesus fuck, Dominic. What the hell are you asking me?”
“You and the Bianchi girls. You picked one hell of a time to buzz around them.”
This was interesting.
“You know, it’s funny you should mention them now. I was going to call you about them. I didn’t know you and Sophia had dealings.”
“We did…and we do, but it’s none of your concern.”
“Hmmm. So what’s so bad about my timing?”
“That’s also none of your business.”
“If that’s the case, why the hell are you phoning me about them?”
“Sophia’s doing a job for me. It’s big, and she can’t afford to make a mistake, especially not while she’s worried about you messing with her sister.”
“Whatever. Are you doing the handoff with them as planned when they turn twenty-five?” I asked the question in the only way that would make Dominic respond with some useful information. I knew my brother too well. He was a vault. The only way I was going to get anything from him was if he thought I was already aware.
“Yes. You know about that?”
“Of course I know,” I lied. “I just don’t know what it’s worth.”
“Twenty-two, including the houses in Sicily.”
“Twenty-two million,” I repeated. “Got it.”
“Okay,” he said, more relaxed now. “So you see why they’re hands off?”
“Yes and no,” I deadpanned.
“Well they are, and that’s all you need to know. Pops will be mad as hell if you don’t follow the plan. He promised their old man he’d watch over them, and he did. Now cut the twenty questions and do as Pops asks. I hate when you start with this play dumb bullshit.”
“I wouldn’t have to ask at all if you just give me the information I need.”
“Pops has his way of doing things.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I said in a huff, keeping up the act so he wouldn’t clue into the fact that he told me way more than I knew before. “So what else do you want?”
“Just making sure you don’t fuck anything up now that it’s only three weeks until they turn twenty-five. Especially with Paige. Sophia is just one of my crew, but you can bet that Moretti has someone watching Paige, even now.”
What. The. Fuck.
No way.
I told Dominic I had to make a call, and after I hung up, I took a seat on the living room sofa to let it all sink in.
Sitting here, well, it was something called irony.
I just slept with the wrong woman.
Heading for the door, I had to wonder if Paige knew at all that she was supposed to ensure peace between the two oldest crime families, that even though we were in the twenty-first century, she was betrothed to Alfredo ‘The Pistol’ Moretti, the most vicious organized crime boss in the world.
I was leaving when Sophia walked right into me at the front door.
Shit.
She was shocked.
And angry.
Jesus Christ.
She could only be this furious if she knew too.
Sophia put a hand to her temple, shaking her head. “Are you out of your damn mind?”
“I was just leaving.”
“Angelo, for crying out loud, what part of leave Paige alone did you not understand?”
“I didn’t realize…I just spoke to Dom. Does Paige even know?”
“It’s none of your business.”
“Of course she doesn’t know. She never would have invited me here if she did.”
“Holy crap. You slept with her?” She held the door open and stood to one side. “Get out, Angelo. Get out now.”
“I won’t disrespect you in your home, but Paige is an adult. She deserves the truth.”
“If I were you I’d take the back stairs. Moretti’s guys are out front. Where is she?”
Paige stormed out of her bedroom in just a bathrobe, with her asthma inhaler in one hand. “I’m right here,” she shouted. “What do I deserve to know, who is Moretti, and why the hell do you have a problem with Angelo, Soph?”
