Wild One Page 24

by Donna Augustine

“They’re ready,” she said, before moving on to tell the rest of the house.

We walked out of the house, walking past spots of red snow that were already getting a new dusting of white as flakes drifted down.

We gathered around the many graves as the bodies were lowered in. My brain was too stunned to hear what was being said by friends and family. No one talked for long, though, as sorrow and exhaustion met in some unbearable place.

Then they were drifting off again, back to the warmth of the building.

I remained, along with Callon and the guys, and Tuesday by my side. It was different for us. We all knew this wasn’t the end. There would be more battles, and more deaths to come. I might’ve wounded the Magician, but I hadn’t killed him.

“Every one of them, huh?” Tuesday asked as she stopped beside me.

“My list and then some.” All the people on my list were gone, plus another shifter I hadn’t seen coming.

I looked over to Callon, wondering how he was doing and knowing I shouldn’t care as much as I did.

He lifted his eyes to me, and we stood there for a few seconds staring at each other as if we were the only ones there.

Then Zink walked over, drawing Callon’s attention away.

“What’s going on with you two?” Tuesday asked.

“I’m not sure,” I said, but it was a lie. It was something terrifying and invigorating, something that made me want to run to him and from him at the same time. It was something that might break me or make me whole, and I didn’t know which.

Look for the continuation of Teddy’s story, in early 2019.
