“We checked it out this week,” Hale says. “It’s perfect, and it’s available immediately.”
I reach in to flick on the lights and hold the door for Kira. Her head swivels left and right, up and down, assessing the space as she enters. “So far, so good,” she says.
“It has everything we’ve been looking for. Most importantly, it’s a great location and there’s room here to grow,” I say.
Our current space was great when we were a startup, but it’s been cramped and insufficient for our needs since we brought in a batch of new hires six months ago.
We tour the building, point out the highlights, and answer Kira’s questions as we go.
“It has a great modern look,” she says. “Even the flooring looks brand new. Very tastefully done.”
“Not your old man’s office, is it?” Hale says.
“Thank goodness, no.” Her laugh makes me smile, as it always does.
“There’s one room that may remind you of Walker Industries,” I say, leading her down a hallway. “The previous occupants left this giant table.” I gesture for her to enter the conference room, and we follow her inside. “Bring back any memories?” I ask.
She runs her hand over the smooth dark wood surface. “It does,” she says, her voice a purr.
“Want a foot rub?” I ask, slipping a hand around her waist and pulling her close.
“Mmmm … so many memories.” She reaches up to caress my cheek and looks into my eyes. “Want to knock me up?”
I laugh as I rub her back and press her against me.
“I’m serious, Pierce,” she says softly. “I think we’re ready to grow our family and I want you to make me pregnant.”
I search her eyes for a moment before I briefly glance at Hale. He’s smiling, looking unsurprised. The three of us have talked about this, of course, but not recently, and the conversations were usually vague. We’ve more than had our hands full, raising Bethany and growing our business.
“Are we ready?” I say, looking down at her and then back over to Hale.
“Yes,” Kira says as Hale nods, still grinning.
I trail my fingers over her cheek and touch my lips to hers, tenderly at first, and then deeper, my mind spinning momentarily with all of the implications.
I love Bethany as my own, and I’d love to give her a sister or brother. I’d love to see Kira’s belly swell again and know that she was carrying part of me inside her.
“Are you ready, Pierce?” she asks when I pull back.
The old me would have hesitated. Maybe I’d have needed to run numbers or prepare for all possible scenarios before agreeing to such an important life decision.
I’m grateful every day that the old me listened to Hale and relaxed enough to let myself fall for Kira, even though getting involved with her would’ve seemed like a bad idea on paper.
Since then I’ve learned that the heart sometimes knows better than the head, and thanks to the two of them, I’m much better at following my heart these days.
“I’d love to knock you up, Ms. Walker,” I say. “In fact, I think it’s company policy, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it is, Mr. Daniels. In fact, I believe you’re obligated to make love to me every time we’re in this conference room together,” Kira says, starting to unbutton my shirt.
“We’re going to buy this place then, right?” Hale says, moving in behind Kira.
“Yeah, we’re definitely buying this place.” She twists her head back to kiss him even as her fingers continue undressing me.
Hale lets down Kira’s hair, and it falls in beautiful dark chocolate waves, framing her face, which looks radiant, even under office lighting.
“I love you so much,” I say, the words rushing out, unplanned. I’ve said them to her many times before, of course, but a rush of emotion floods my brain, as I realize what might not have been, and all I’ve gained by taking a chance three years ago.
“I love you too, Pierce,” she says, following her words with a kiss that makes me grateful beyond words that she ever came into my life. When we part, she turns in my arms and faces our partner. “I love you too, Hale.”
“I love you, babe,” he says, giving her a penetrating look before crushing his lips to hers.
“Both of you,” Kira says, cupping each of our faces in her hands, “always.”
