“Shut up, Dave,” Rex said and gave Dave’s leg a little kick.
Rex went over and was talking to Vincent telling him he’d live, but to concentrate on breathing and not to talk. A few moments later Tannya and Miss Kitty walked in. Miss Kitty was done crying and looked pissed.
“I hope both you jerks enjoy prison!” she said. Then she walked over to Vincent and knelt down by him. “You destroyed your life and the lives of everyone you came into contact with, but you didn’t destroy mine. I’m going to be just fine!” she said and kicked him hard in the stomach.
I could hear the sound of sirens through the broken window.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Sunday came way too quickly. I woke up to a warm body next to me. It was nice to have him there. I rolled over and put my arm around him. A moment later, a large tongue covered my entire face in one lick. Geez!! I shot straight up. It seemed the warm body was Pepper. I’d forgotten about him. He was apparently feeling better, and somehow made it to my bed. I should have set the alarm to let him out. Derek walked in with two cups of coffee.
“Morning!” he sang. “We have four inches of snow, and it’s still coming down. There were some Mexicans here this morning, plowing already.”
Ugh, he is such a morning person. I really didn’t feel much like talking yet, but I smiled and took the coffee.
“Thanks. That’s good. Now you don’t have to shovel. Did Pepper go out yet?”
“Yup, he woke me up an hour ago with a big, wet kiss. I thought it was you at first.”
“Ha, ha. I could say the same to you. I got one of those, too, and it took a second to figure it out!”
“So what are you plans for the day?” he asked.
“I have none. But I can’t do too much, I’ll have to be here for Pepper. You?” I asked.
“I have to make a stop at the police station, and so do you. Tannya and Elenore said they’d be there about 8:00 a.m. I spoke to Rex this morning, and he said to come in a little later. He’s the only one to take statements and can’t do us all at the same time. I have breakfast almost ready, so we can go in awhile.”
“Sounds good to me,” I told him and took a sip.
He was standing at my bedside leaning on the wall, looking me up and down.
“And then, you and I are going to pick up some food, come back here, and lock ourselves in this cabin for a snowed-in, drama-free day!” he told me.
“Mmmm, a drama-free day? That sounds nice … but what about tonight?” I asked with a flirtatious smile.
“Oh, I got big plans for tonight,” he said with a smirk. “Tonight will be very exciting,” he said. “Tonight, I plan to destroy you for all other men.” He winked, turned on his heels, and walked out.
