A Love Restrained Page 23

by Becky Flade

  “Both of us?”

  “All three of us. Together.”

“Are you going to share with me or Daddy? Cause he only has two beds at his house.”

“Your mom and I would share.”

Brady’s head dipped. She couldn’t see his face. What’s he thinking? How heavy a moment is this for him? He’s been through so much lately. This is a turning point for our family, for our future. We should’ve waited to do this.

Her little boy looked up. With his face this close to hers, his eyes appeared luminous. She couldn’t read them. She’d always been so in tune with her little boy’s feelings. He wore his heart on his sleeve, unlike his parents with their foolish guarded hearts.

But he’s learned to be cautious. They took that from him. She bit back rage. The people responsible paid their consequences. I won’t let them hurt my family ever again. We’re not suffering for the sins of others anymore.

“What are you feeling, baby? You can tell us anything, always. What do you want to know?”

“Will we be like a real family?”

She recognized the hope and cautious happiness in his gaze. Heard it reflected in the soft question. And her heart swelled dousing the anger, erasing the pain. Love cleansed.

“Just like.” She kissed his brow.

  Jayson smiled. “Just like.”

Brady grinned and bounced on her lap. A piece of his innocence returned by the simple show of love between his parents and a promise of forever she thought he understood even if he couldn’t have named it as such.

“Can we get a puppy to sleep in my room with me?”

She met Jayson’s gaze, and in his eyes, she saw the happily ever after she hadn’t believed existed. The one he hadn’t believed he deserved. He lifted their still joined hands to his mouth and kissed the inside of her wrist.

“First, we have to get mommy a ring.”
