‘How so?’ she teased him, hearing the laughter in her question, but he did not return it, his voice as serious as she had ever heard.
‘Because grace has finally come to me and without you…’ He did not finish as her tongue ran around the sensitive skin on the inside of his thumb.
‘Love me,’ he whispered and turned to cover her body with his own, the wound on his side much healed in the three days it had taken to journey to Belridden. He was careful with his weight upon her, settling his hands at her hips.
‘I would nae wish to hurt the bairn, but I need you close, like this.’ His knees opened her legs and she opened them further, holding him to her, warm and right.
‘When you told me you loved me on the field at Edinburgh…?’ He had not said it again.
‘I love you, mo nighean mhaiseach, and will do so for ever. I swear it.’
The pale eyes caught in the light of the single candle were shadow-blue. Beautiful. Like the first time she had ever seen him, as he had strode into Grantley. But now the beauty did not worry her and he was not disappointed. She could see that in the way his eyes widened as she reached out and offered him everything.
