Tell Me a Secret is a book filled with complex and troubled characters. At its core lies a very demanding yet rewarding profession – psychotherapy. And it’s a subject very close to my heart, not least because my brother is an experienced therapist working within the health service. Of course, he’s extremely professional and confidentiality is paramount to him, but learning about therapy in general over the years heightened my interest in the subject.

That, along with experiencing excellent counselling myself just when I needed it, I felt driven to undertake a course, and I was lucky enough to be accepted onto a four-year degree programme in psychotherapy. The first year was eye-opening, rewarding and challenging.

As a person-centred course (the modality pioneered by Carl Rogers), the training, as well as the therapy itself, is a journey of self-discovery rather than a destination. The whole ethos and effectiveness of person-centred counselling is based upon relationships. At the heart of good therapy lies the unique connection between the therapist and client.

And of course, as an author, it got me thinking. Therapy of all types is extremely helpful to many people, but what if it goes wrong? What if the therapist fails at her job? What if her own troubled past, as in Lorna’s case, catches up with the present? So I made this unique client–counsellor situation the core of my story, which as you found out, leads to a devastating and heartbreaking outcome for Lorna. Therapists are human too, after all.

Tell Me a Secret is a book steeped in relationships – from Cath’s more light-hearted dating disasters and the women’s friendships, to the controlling dynamic between Mark and Lorna, to the sometimes difficult relationship between a step-parent and step-child. And not least, the tragic love story between Lorna and Andrew. But, of course, the most important relationship we will ever have is with ourselves – the most complicated love story of all!

Finally, if you enjoyed my book, it would be wonderful if you could write an online review. I genuinely value your feedback and, of course, it helps spread the word! And I’d love you to join me on Facebook or Twitter too, or take a look at my website for details of all my other books. The details are below.

In the meantime, I’m busy working on my next story and can’t wait to share it with you!

  Acknowledgements

Once again, it’s time to give my sincere thanks to a wonderful team of people who have helped shape my book into the best it can be. Writing it is only the beginning of the process, so I must again give huge thanks to Jessie Botterill, my amazing and insightful editor, for all her hard work and passion. Couldn’t do it without you! And of course, my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all the wonderful team at Bookouture for getting my books ‘out there’ – not least the tireless and enthusiastic Kim Nash and Noelle Holten. Your energy and passion for bringing amazing stories to readers is boundless! Plus, a big thank you to Séan and Catherine for your eagle-eyes and hard work, and also to Maisie for being an early and very helpful reader.

Agent extraordinaire, Oli Munson… what can I say? Thank you! You’re the best and I love being in ‘Oliver’s Army’ and part of Team A.M. Heath. Big thanks also to Jennifer Custer, Hélène Ferey and Alexandra McNicoll for everything you do, and have done, over the years.

Tell Me a Secret has a very important and often difficult profession at its heart, so I’d like to give sincere thanks to my brother, Joe, a very experienced therapist. All our late-night chats and brainstorming were incredibly useful and your knowledge and input invaluable. Any errors or, indeed, indiscretions by my characters, are either fictitious or my own mistakes!

No acknowledgements would be complete without a special mention of Tracy Fenton and THE Book Club on Facebook – along with her incredible admin team and amazing members. How does this one fare for ‘In Your Pants’?

Finally, as ever, a massive thank you to all my readers around the world – I love hearing what you think of my books! And finally, finally, love to my dear friend Debbie, whose listening ear over the months of writing this book rivalled any therapy! And of course lots of love to my dear family, Avril and Paul, Graham and Marina, Joe, Ben, Polly and Lucy – for everything.
