Writing a novel is a long process that starts months or even years before you write the first word. Special thanks to my son, Owen Satran, who first broke down the elements that evolved into this book; Christina Baker Kline, who told me that whatever I wrote had to be funny and introduced me to my wonderful agent, Johanna Castillo; and to my LA BFF, Kate Juergens, who listened to me rant, postulate, complain, crow, worry, and wonder throughout the writing of this book, and responded with calm, clarity, creativity, and wisdom.

Thanks to Jesse Calhoun, who summoned the magic along with the bird. (I live in Los Angeles, where these things are real.)

Other friends, supporters, and colleagues who helped give Liza a new life include: Alex Enders and Verlyn Klinkenborg, Alexa and Claude Garbarino, Amy Neiman, Charlene and Tom Hajny, Danielle Roderick and Josh Parkinson, Deborah Gilbert, Denise Rue, Elizabeth Condon, Henry Seltzer, Jeannie Ralston, Justine Goodman, Kendall Wilkinson, Kim Bonnell and Michael Sukin, Laurie and Frank Albanese, Sarah Haberman, and Wendy Smith.

To my family, Rory and Joe Satran, Nathaniel and Plum Kilcer, love forever.
