“Glad you’re not regretting your decision,” Colm said. “Yet.”

“I won’t,” Reese said, quite sure of himself. “This is where I belong. I know it in my gut. I know it in my bones.”

Theis kissed him and spread a hand along Reese’s stomach.

Another realization crossed his mind. “What are the chances I’m pregnant?”

“It doesn’t happen every time,” Colm said. “And now we can use condoms… until you’re ready.”

Reese had never seen himself as a father before… but suddenly he could. Not yet, hopefully. He had a lot to learn about this new world he belonged to before he’d feel ready for that.

But then, life had a way of happening when you were least expecting it.

“If I were to get pregnant… what happens? I mean… I don’t have a vagina, so how does this all work?”

“Now you ask these questions?” Theis asked with a laugh.

“Better late than never,” Reese said.

“Bears carry either seed or eggs in their sperm. If an egg and seed come together, the embryo will move into your bloodstream until it implants itself in your abdomen. When it’s time, there will be a Caesarian to safely deliver the child,” Theis answered.

“And I’ll get all big and fat with a baby like a woman?”

“Like a human female, yes,” Colm answered. “But some take years to get pregnant, so I wouldn’t worry too much.”

“But all it takes is once, right?” Reese asked, growing a little nervous.

“We’re here for you, regardless if you are or aren’t,” Theis said. “We’ll protect you. Forever.”

Reese relaxed into their arms. “I like the sound of that.”

“Good. Because you aren’t getting rid of us,” Colm said, giving him a tight squeeze and a kiss.

Reese looked into the bear’s glowing eyes and smiled. He turned and saw the lavender glow of Theis’ eyes… and knew they cared for him.

  And he them.

Reese couldn’t wait to see where this life took them. What an adventure that would be.

  Epilogue

Colm entered the king’s chamber when he was bidden, the vamp’s head in the pillow case. Theis and Reese walked beside him, ready to show the king they’d followed his command.

They would be free to live in Midnight… together.

When they stopped before the dais, Colm saw Eilam standing with some of the King’s Guard.

“What was so urgent that you had to see me immediately?” the king asked Theis.

Colm reached into the bag and pulled out the vampire’s head. “This.”

The king rose from his throne and took the steps down. He stared at the head, grimacing. “And this is my would-be assassin?”

“It is,” Theis said. “Colm killed at least a dozen vampires in their nest. Solomon took on an untold amount, as well.”

“And you?” the king asked Theis.

“Two,” he said quietly. “Colm is an impressive fighter. I’ve seen few who move as fast as he does.”

The king looked impressed. He turned to face Eilam. “Maybe this hillbilly bear of yours has potential after all.”

“You’ll put him on your guard?” Eilam asked.

“No,” the king said. “But I think he’d make a very good officer for the Midnight police.”

Eilam sighed, shaking his head. “You need more on your guard.”

“After much consideration, I believe I agree with you,” the king said. “But I won’t have these two lovebirds making eyes at one another instead of guarding me. Find me another.”

“I will begin the search for the right men,” Eilam said. “And you can have your choice.”

“I’m glad to see you have obeyed my command, as well,” the king said, turning to Theis. “He’s now a proper bear’s mate.”

  “Yes, Your Majesty,” Theis answered.

“A bear always gets his mate,” Eilam said pointedly to the king.

The king glared at Eilam before turning back to Reese. “Your bears are potent lovers. They’ve worked fast.” The king patted Reese’s stomach.

Colm turned to meet Reese’s wide stare. “Are you saying he’s—”

“Pregnant? Oh yes,” the king answered.

Colm was stunned by the news… but the shock soon turned to joy. A smile spread over his lips. After glancing at Theis and seeing another smile, he looked to Reese, who stood looking a bit numb.

A little of the air was let out of his balloon when he saw Reese’s response… but then how could he expect their human to feel joy with the whirlwind he was caught within.

“Leave me. All of you,” the king said before turning to Theis. “And since your mate solved our assassin problem, I suppose you could take another couple of days off to enjoy your new bear lover and your pregnant human.”

“I’m honored you would be so generous,” Theis said, bowing.

They exited the chamber. Once out in the hall, Colm turned to Reese, whose face was incredibly pale. “Are you alright?”

Reese looked up at him, the golden light shining bright in his eyes. “I will be.”

Theis moved in close, surrounding Reese in a hug. “Like we’ve already said… we will always be here to protect you. And our young.”

Colm cupped Reese’s cheek with one hand, tilting the human’s face up to his. He searched the man’s eyes and face, hoping to see a little sign to bring him hope. Reese looked numb.

  “Life happens,” the human whispered.

Colm tilted his head, unsure if the words were of acceptance—or disappointment.

Reese gave a slight smile. “We take what’s given to us and we do the best to make it good.”

Colm smiled. “Isn’t there some human saying about lemons and lemonade?”

  Reese chuckled.

Colm lowered a hand to press against Reese’s stomach, dumbfounded by the fact their child already grew within him. Theis lowered a hand to lay on top of Colm’s.

“We can do this. Together,” Reese said. “Right?”

  “Together,” Colm said.

  “Forever,” Theis added.

Colm drew them both into his arms, holding his new little family tight. When Reese squeezed him back, he knew they’d make out okay.

Hart used his PK meter and scanned the field. Off in the distance, Nick, Griffin, and Jeph did the same. They’d laid out a grid, and each of them had taken a section to scan.

One way or another, they’d find the way back in so they could save Reese.

His meter went off, the lights flashing bright.

A man appeared out of thin air and walked up to Hart. He lifted the same device they’d used to wipe Hart’s mind the last time. Hart met the man’s stare—and lust slammed into him.

The man lowered the device. “Who are you?”

“I could ask the same question,” Hart asked. “Is Reese okay? Is he still in Midnight?”

A frown came to the man’s face. “You remember?”
