Wedding Date Rescue Page 15

by Sonya Weiss

“Partly, but also because I wanted you to know that my love for you will never have an ending.”

Casey touched the side of his face. “Neither will mine.”

Her heart soared as they walked away from the lake to continue their love story.

  Epilogue

Casey sat on the sofa in Kent’s living room. Samples of various wedding invitations were strewn over the coffee table. Brochures with glossy images of cakes were stacked next to the mess. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and picked up one of the brochures. Every time she moved her hand, her diamond flashed, and it continued to fill her with a sense of awe. I’m marrying Kent. She didn’t think there were any words more amazing than those. “We have the invitations down—now we just need to decide on the cake.”

He walked into the living room and handed her a cup of coffee, then sat beside her. “Invitations, the cake…those things are just the details. What interests me the most is marrying you.”

Casey sipped the coffee. “I can see why. I’m the best thing that ever happened to you.” She was teasing him, but he didn’t smile.

“You are.” He looked deep into her eyes. “You always will be.”

“We’re the best thing that ever happened to each other.” Casey leaned over and kissed him. “I want everyone to find what we have. Speaking of, have you heard from Lincoln? He should have been here by now.”

Kent glanced at his watch, and the doorbell rang. “Great timing.” He went to answer, and Lincoln walked in.

She peered around him. “Where’s Josie?”

“How should I know?” Lincoln looked puzzled.

Casey put her hands on her hips. “I told you we needed to see the both of you. I figured you’d stop by and give her a ride.”

“Sorry, sis. My mind-reading abilities seem to be out of order.”

A horn sounded in the driveway, and Josie pulled up, parking behind Kent’s truck. She got out carrying a box from the bakery. As she joined them in the living room, Casey didn’t miss the tension between her best friend and her brother.

“Is something going on?” she asked.

“No,” Lincoln and Josie said vehemently in unison.

Josie held out the box. “Wedding cake samples.”

“Thank you.” Casey took it. “The reason I asked you to come over is because…I want you to be my maid of honor.”

Josie squealed and nodded. “I would love that.” She gave Casey a tight hug.

“And I want you to be my best man,” Kent said to Lincoln.

“I’d be honored.” Lincoln shook Kent’s hand.

“We also need you to help us with some wedding details,” Casey said.

Josie nodded enthusiastically. “Whatever you need.”

“We’re here for you,” Lincoln said.

“Good. That means the two of you will have to work closely together,” Kent said.

Lincoln and Josie exchanged a look, and Casey caught their mutually dismayed expressions. Something was definitely going on with her brother and her best friend. Casey could feel the tension, and later that evening, after they left, she said as much to Kent.

“I know. I sensed it, too, but they’ll work it out.”

  “I hope so.”

“Come with me.” Kent grabbed a throw blanket off the back of the couch and led the way outside to the porch. “Remember how we used to talk all night?”

“I loved it when we did that.” Casey sat down on the swing, and Kent joined her, tucking the blanket around them.

“Me, too. There’s nothing I’d like more right now than to watch the sun rise knowing that it’s the start of a new day with us together.”

Casey leaned her head against his shoulder. “Another page in the story of us.”

“I love you,” he said softly right before he kissed her.

Snuggled in his arms, Casey realized she hadn’t needed to look too hard to find her Mr. Right. He’d been there all along.

  Acknowledgments

I wanted to write a series set around the lives of firefighters because they are some of the greatest heroes we have. Not only do they spend tough hours training, and endure long lengths of time away from their families, but they run into places and situations that are often life-threatening in order to save someone else.

Only a small portion of the research into the life of a firefighter made it into this book but what I did use was invaluable thanks to the expertise of one of those heroes, Master Firefighter Stephen Dolan of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue (MCFRS). He patiently spent time answering all my questions so that I could write this story as accurately as possible.

Many firefighters get involved in worthy causes such as the Charleston Area Firefighter Calendar. The money made from the sale of the calendars featuring these handsome and selfless heroes is given to the Charleston Animal Society’s Medical Fund. These funds are used to help the injured or abused animals that desperately need both care and love. You can find out more at charlestonfirefightercalendar.com or by visiting www.facebook.com/FirefightersRescuingAnimals.

There is a large team behind the scenes at Entangled and they work tirelessly on every book. No words, hugs, chocolate, or wine will ever be enough to thank them for what they do.

Alycia Tornetta is a wonderful editor. She’s sweet, funny, gifted, and has an amazing knack for always knowing what to say.

Cheryl, Lynn, Adriana, Dineen, Marry, Betty, Dala-thank you for everything. You know why. For Dennis, first because of the red hair, then because of the blue.

  Toni—you are the best.
