“The sheriff and his men already know that we’re staying here. Now that an attempt was made on their friend’s life, I think I’ll have a shadow for quite some time.”

  * * * *

Juliet ran to the bathroom after taking the phone call. How the hell was he able to see her, to remain undetected under everyone’s noses? There were ex-military surrounding her and her friends. She felt so sick to her stomach, and she couldn’t stop shaking. He was going to succeed. Robert would kill Carl and Richie and perhaps her friends, too, if Juliet didn’t go willingly with him when he came for her.

She was filled with a mix of emotions. She couldn’t let others suffer because of her. She closed her eyes and sat on the closed lid on the toilet in the bathroom. Instantly, she saw the images pop into her head. She covered her ears. She could almost hear the sounds of pain as Robert and his goons tormented and beat Danny as she was restrained in front of him. She never forgot the look in Danny’s eyes. The way he pleaded for life and promised to never touch her again as long as he could live. He begged and cried out with such fear and pain, she had nightmares about him.

Oh God, please protect Carl and Richie. Please protect my friends.

She remembered Robert’s face as he slit Danny’s throat. She remembered the blood, the lack of respect for life, and how he kicked his dead body then grabbed her by the throat and brought her face right in front of Daddy’s beaten, battered corpse.

No man will ever touch you again. You know whom you belong to. Four more months, Juliana. Just four more months and you’ll be completely his. He’ll kill anyone that touches you.

She recalled Robert’s words as she cried out in agony and sadness. Robert killed Danny.

She remembered feeling as if she were numb and almost felt like she was having an out-of-body experience then. It was the only way to describe it. She knew what she saw and heard was real. She remembered the police questioning her about Danny’s disappearance because they knew she was friends with him. Her tears and almost hysteria were accepted as young love. They even recommended to her stepfather placing her on Valium for a few days to help calm her.

He actually tried to force her to take them, but she knew if she did that he wouldn’t wait the four months until her twentieth birthday. He also knew she had her menstrual cycle that night. The maids in the house were watching out for him. Nothing was sacred or could be kept a secret from Pierce Mellbrook.

She hugged herself as she recalled the next set of events and knew that it could have been her that lay naked, battered, raped, and slaughtered in Pierce’s bedroom. She saw him having sex with the young redhead. She saw him beating her and calling her Juliana. Juliet witnessed the fear in the woman’s eyes and the anger in Pierce’s eyes as he struck the woman with the knife repeatedly. She had turned to run, freaked out and ready to call the police when she slammed into Robert and his guards. He had gripped her tight, shook her as he warned her.

Not a fucking word or you’ll wind up the same way. You never saw a thing, Juliana. Go to bed.

She ran to her room, hysterical, knowing that she needed to escape now while she had a chance. She grabbed a bag, threw in some belongings and money she’d saved up, and took off out the window and down the latticed arch below. She ran like hell and kept running until she grabbed a bus ticket and headed north. Weeks later she met Susanna, and from there she met the other women. A future seemed possible since Pierce was not on her trail, nor was Robert. They thought she was weak and probably figured she was dead. Juliet had never expected either man to show up. Her luck had run out. Two years. Two nice years of establishing the business, making new friends that she considered family, and now their lives were in jeopardy. She had found love, let herself open up her heart, but in doing so, she’d placed two men she loved in the ultimate danger. She had to get her shit together. She couldn’t be weak anymore. She couldn’t allow Robert and Pierce to take everything away from her with their threats and conditions. She wouldn’t live like this, and God knew she wouldn’t survive under Robert’s or Pierce’s control.

She had to think like Pierce thought. He was a manipulative, sneaky snake of a man. He was lower than the lowest, and if she wanted to ensure her friends’ safety and Carl’s and Richie’s safety, then some self-sacrifice and strategic thinking were necessary. She’d take her own life before she would let Robert or Pierce take it from her.

“This is what we’ve got. Pierce Mellbrook owns over thirty different Fortune 500 companies. He has dozens of small businesses that he turned into franchises. He’s worth billions,” Monte stated as he glanced up at BJ, Michael, Chad, Richie, Mason, and his brother, Steven.

“Great, so the fucker is loaded, which means he has resources,” Michael stated.

“Yes, he sure as shit does. Has a few ex-cons on his payroll, some others who were connected to known gangsters, both drug lords and mafia,” Monte added.

“Robert and his three main thugs?” Mason asked as he leaned against the wall in Michael and Chad’s home office.

  Monte nodded.

“Let me finish up on Pierce and I’ll tell you all about Robert. Pierce is not under the radar of our friends in the FBI. I called the commander, and he seemed very interested in the fact that your girlfriend is his stepdaughter. Apparently when her boyfriend went missing, he was last seen driving his car out of the community college campus. When the police questioned Juliet, also known as Juliana Saville, she seemed hysterical and could barely control her upset. The FBI and some investigators were looking into the disappearance of three women. All redheads and under the age of eighteen who were found murdered or went missing. As they sniffed around, they planted some inside people and found out that what Juliet told us is true. Her stepfather wanted her. Before the FBI could talk to her about what may or may not have happened to her boyfriend, she disappeared. The medical examiner noted a time of death on the body of Danny, Juliet’s boyfriend, and the young woman found murdered. They occurred within twenty-four hours of one another. That is when Juliet took off. She told us which day and what time in the evening.”

“Holy shit. So do they think Pierce killed the young woman and maybe the boyfriend? They never found the boyfriend’s body?” BJ asked.

“I think either he or Robert committed the murders. I’m just taking a guess here, but perhaps after killing Danny, her stepfather was so enraged he took it out on one of these substitute women he used until he could have Juliet. Then he lost control and brutally murdered her. Maybe Robert helped clean things up and Juliet took off. Then Robert had to get rid of the body faster as he tried to chase down Juliet, and, therefore, this body was found but not Danny’s.”

“That makes total sense, Monte. If Pierce was obsessed with Juliet, then he or Robert could have murdered both in twenty-four hours. Pierce found out that Juliet was sleeping with Danny, lost her virginity, and this enraged Pierce,” BJ stated.

“Then Pierce knows he can’t take Juliet yet but grabs a redhead, has sex with her, then takes his anger and frustration out on her imagining it’s Juliet. That makes sense especially since the local police there have been searching for a killer. All the victims were redheads, right, Monte?” Mason asked, and Monte nodded.

Richie exhaled. “They’re both monsters. How the hell can they get away with killing those people?” he asked in frustration.

“They’re not going to get away with it. I think the commander is going to want to speak with Juliet, Richie. She lived in that mansion. She was exposed to Pierce’s daily business activities. She fears those two men, and she should. Here’s what I got on Robert. This fucker has been questioned over a dozen times in various murder investigations, missing persons cases, and blackmail investigations that people accused Mellbrook of. Each time they drop the case. There wasn’t enough evidence against him. And get this, he was also questioned about Danny Corrano’s murder,” Monte told them.

  “Holy fuck,” Richie stated.

  “You need t
o talk to her, Richie. You have to make Juliet see that she doesn’t have to be afraid anymore and that we have the resources to help her,” BJ said.

“You saw her today. You all saw the fear in her eyes and the way she closed up and wouldn’t talk to anyone. The fucking sniper shot Carl. She’s scared. I’m scared,” Richie admitted.

“Hey, we’re here, aren’t we? We’re a fucking team. We always have been and always will be. We’ll take these fuckers down, Richie. The moment they took that sniper shot, they sent us all into military mode. We’ve sniffed out moles in foreign governments and held up in dirt holes in the middle of the fucking jungle. We sure as shit can handle some billionaire murderer and his fellow psychopath guard. Robert has no military background. He’s just a psycho who needs to pay for his crimes. Now get it together, and let’s figure out what we’re doing next,” Monte stated.

  * * * *

Juliet was exhausted. Her head was pounding as she started to pack more clothes into a suitcase to take to Richie’s. Susanna stood in the doorway. The men were downstairs waiting.

“Don’t worry, Juliet. The guys will take care of everything. One night absent from the club is not the end of the world. London is back and feeling much better, and I have two very good-looking soldier friends of Monte’s covering Richie’s and Carl’s shifts.” Susanna rubbed her hands together and gave a slick smile.

Juliet tossed her hair over her shoulder. She stared at Susanna a moment. “Just in case I never told you, I love you, Susanna, and you mean the world to me. If we hadn’t met on that bus…”

Susanna was across the room and pulling Juliet into her arms faster than Juliet could complete her sentence. She hugged her back.

Susanna pulled back slightly to look down into Juliet’s eyes. Susanna had a few inches in height over her. She caressed her hair.

“You’re a beautiful, strong woman. Do not let these assholes get into your head. You hit the gold mine with Carl and Richie. Monte and BJ filled me in on some of their experiences, connections, and abilities. Together, our men can take these two morons down. Be patient, and always be prepared.”

“I know what you’re saying. I want to believe it so badly it hurts, but then I remember Carl getting shot. I remember Richie’s strong voice and him tackling us to the ground. I can’t get the vision of the blood covering Carl’s hand as he held the wound. It makes me remember things. Things I just want to forget.”

“Carl is fine, Juliet. It was a flesh wound, and sure he was damn lucky, but now they all have a better idea of whom they’re dealing with. I know you’ve kept secrets, and God knows you know that I have, but I love these men. I trust these men. They aren’t the bad guys.”

Juliet thought about that a moment. They weren’t the bad guys. They were the good guys, and good guys tended to play by the rules. Robert and Pierce didn’t believe that rules or laws applied to them. They were untouchable unless she started using the information she had against them to put them away for life. But how could she do that while keeping them at bay from Carl, Richie, and all her friends? She had the box of items, papers, phone recordings, video, and photographs locked up in a box under the floorboard in her room. There was enough evidence to send both Robert and Pierce away for life. They had no idea what she had recorded and witnessed except for the two murders. The two men would get away with that, especially with the high-priced attorneys Pierce kept on board and at his beck and call.

“I know they’re special. I just wish none of this was happening right now. My relationship with Carl and Richie is so new.”

“They’ve been keeping an eye on you for nearly a year. I’m glad you finally decided to further investigate your attraction.”

“Me, too,” Juliet added then smiled.

“Hey, Susanna. I want you to know that I have some really important stuff that is precious to me hidden in this room.”

  “What do you mean?”

“It’s just some stuff from my past and things that I gathered over the years. I want you to know about it. I mean just in case something goes wrong.”

“Hey, nothing is going to go wrong.”

“Well, humor me, will ya? It’s under a loose set of floorboards under my bed. Just remember it in case, okay?”

“Nothing is going to happen to you. Be strong and be smart.”

“I will, and thanks for the talk.”

“You bet. I’d better get ready for work.”

Susanna left the room, and Juliet closed the door. She needed to add some other information to the files. She quickly wrote some things down on a piece of paper, then gathered some dates and times along with pictures she kept in a separate file. She reached under the bed, pulled out the thick envelope, and began to pack the new stuff inside. In her rush to do so, an envelope opened up and a picture of Danny popped out. Her heart hammered inside of her chest. He was dead because of her, and Carl nearly died because of her. She wouldn’t let them get hurt. Never again would Pierce or Robert hurt those she loved.

As she recovered the files and pushed down her comforter, the bedroom door opened.

“Juliet?” She heard Richie’s concerned voice.

“Yes?” she answered as he moved from the doorway deeper into her room.

“I was worried and then I didn’t see you right away. What are you doing down there?”

“I just dropped something. I have some stuff packed.”

“Good. I have some great news.”

  “Yeah?”

“Carl’s on his way home. He’ll be there by the time we get back.”

“Oh God, is it safe? Will he be okay?”

“He wouldn’t stay a night away from you. I think they kicked him out.”

He chuckled as he grabbed her bag and then her hand.

  “Let’s go, baby.”

  Chapter 11

“So let me get this straight, you need more time there to figure out whether or not this place is worth my time and money?” Pierce Mellbrook asked Robert over the phone.

“This has turned into a rather sensitive situation.”

“Sensitive how? What the fuck are you rambling on about, Robert? Is it a fucking gold mine or what? Time is money, and right now I have another potential situation brewing and I may need your skills, if you know what I mean.”

  “What’s that about?”

“Feds. Seems they’ve suddenly grown an interest in my financial investments overseas, and coincidentally, Broderick’s lawyers sent a letter accusing me of blackmailing him. I thought you scared him enough?”

“I thought I did, too. So that’s what you need my expertise in? You need me to get rid of him?”

“We’ll discuss particulars when you return. Dixie Chix isn’t going anywhere so why not just head back to Austin in the morning? We’ll go over everything.”

“Well, Pierce, I think once I tell you why this situation is so sensitive you’ll understand. I just think you should not jump the gun here when I tell you.”

“Robert, just spit it out. What the fuck?”

“The dance hall Dixie Chix is incredible. It’s worth owning, and it’s owned by seven women.”

“Seven women? Shit. Then I guess this will be a piece of cake. I ain’t never met a woman who was better than me in business, nor any man for that matter. Is that the sensitive part?”

“No. One of the women is someone we know.”

“Okay, you’ve got my attention. Who is it?”

  “Juliana.”

Robert listened, waited for the yelling, the obscenities, anything that indicated that his boss heard him. He was about to repeat himself when Pierce spoke.

“I’m getting on a plane. I’ll be there by morning. You get her, bring her back to the hotel, and wait there for me.”

“I won’t be able to do that.”

“Why the fuck not? She’s mine. I thought she was dead because you never found her and she didn’t return home. She was so young and naive. How the hell did she survive? My God, what does she
look like? Is she beautiful? She’d be about twenty-two now.”

  “She’s involved in a relationship.”

“Who gives a fuck? You take care of him, and that’s final.”

“It’s not a typical relationship, Pierce. This town, Delite, is unique to say the least.”

“You’re rambling again, Robert. What kind of relationship?”

  “She’s fucking two guys.”

Robert pulled the phone away from his ear as the yelling and anger penetrated through the line.

“I told you that this was a sensitive situation.” Robert told Pierce about the ménage relationships, the owners of the dance hall, and the locals in the community.

“So we start blackmailing her suppliers. Start with the liquor suppliers then the board of health and fire inspectors. It’s a fucking hick town in the middle of Texas. How difficult can it be to start fucking with her friends and co-owners to make Juliana submit? Oh crap, wait a minute. I just got an idea. I’ve got plenty of businesses like this one. I don’t need it, but I will need some leverage to get Juliana out of there and to come back home with me. You said her friends are close and that she has two lovers?”

“Yes, Teddy took a shot at one of them and hit him in the shoulder.”

“Good, very good. She’ll know that they’re accessible. We’ll threaten their lives. She’ll give in quickly. I’m still flying out tonight. I want to see this place. I want to walk in there and see her face when I arrive. Tell me, Robert, how lovely is she? It’s been so difficult to find others.”

“I’ll send you some pictures that Teddy took.”

“Send them right away. I’ll call you when I arrive. My Juliana will truly be mine in a matter of days.”

  * * * *

Carl was lying down on the big, wide couch in the living room watching Juliet as she helped Richie make dinner. If it weren’t for his aching shoulder, the bandages, and the fact that eight highly trained soldiers stood guard around the property, it would almost seem like a normal evening with their girlfriend. He took in the sight of his woman. She was more than a girlfriend. In a matter of days she had become his everything. She looked gorgeous as usual, wearing her hair tied back in a low ponytail. The red locks brushed over her lower back and the patch of skin. She wore a pair of black hip-hugger pants that showed off her perfect ass as well as her belly ring every time she raised her arms up to reach for something or bend over. The navy-blue T-shirt she wore fell off the shoulders and revealed a pretty lace tank top. She was breathtaking.
