Sophia looked over her shoulder. “You know, if you would have asked me yesterday what Nicole’s future was, I would’ve said trouble,” she said. “Now I’m not so sure.”
“The future’s always changing,” Leila mused.
“It is,” I said, looking at my circle of friends. “But I’m glad I have you guys for whatever comes next.”
Erin put an arm around me. “Me too.”
“Yeah,” said Lucy.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Sophia with a smile.
“We are pretty awesome,” said Leila. “I mean, look at what we created!”
The five of us faced our light display and watched it pulse to the music while all around us kids danced, sang, and laughed. It felt good to be part of the reason they were happy, and it made me think of so many other things we could do.
But that could wait until tomorrow. Tonight I was going to have fun with my friends.
And maybe enjoy some watered-down punch.
