  * * *

  The next day at three, he sat on the antigrav train The Silvercat Express as it streaked out of Nioedo at 120 miles an hour.

  He wondered how long she would wait for him, and how mad or sad she would be when she realized he had stood her up. He wondered how much she would hurt. He wondered if she would cry.

  As he watched the city’s metal towers give way to suburbs and then to field and forest, he told himself she deserved it. Given how she had treated him during their last few encounters, she had earned every tear she might shed over this.

  The question he carefully avoided asking himself was: If that were true, why didn’t he feel more pleased?
