“Hello, my dears,” Eva said, and patted the side of her bed for Heather to take a seat.
She took it gladly and grasped Eva’s frail hand in her own. “I’m so glad you’re awake.”
“Not even coma can keep this old bird down,” Eva replied, then laughed, a tinkling note of mirth which lifted the mood in the room, instantly. “I heard you’ve been up to your usual tactics. Solving crimes. Bringing justice to those who need it.”
“Don’t encourage her,” Ryan said, from the door.
“Oh shush, you,” Eva replied, flapping her hands. “If it hadn’t been for Heather’s superior investigating skills, you’d have the wrong girl in custody right now.”
Heather’s curiosity gene itched and squirmed at its locus. “Eva, what happened the night you were attacked?”
“Oh my dear, it wasn’t the night, it was the day.”
They all gathered round to listen, except for Ryan, who’d already heard her testimony and written a report on it.
“It was just after my delivery of donuts had arrived. I was gardening, minding my own business, when Gary Larkin walked up to me and raised this torrid gold trophy thing.” Eva broke off and shuddered, delicately. “The next thing I remember, I was waking up in this room.”
Heather patted Eva’s arm. “It’s good to have you back, Eva. Donut Delights has missed you.”
“You didn’t happen to bring any donuts, did you?” Eva asked, her grey eyebrows dancing around.
Laughter filled the room once more.
