“So,” he whispered. “I figure that little confrontation effectively ended my time at Lane & Shaw?”

  * * * *

“I still think we should have taken our gift back,” Jill said as Chris drove them away from Brooklyn.

“It was a vase that cost ten dollars! What do you want with it?” Chris asked Jill with a hint of amusement in his voice. “I’m sorry about what happened in there, Jill. Nobody deserved that job more than you—all the work you put in? While looking hotter and more fuckable each and every day?”

Jill smirked at Chris’s attempt to cheer her up. She looked at her reflection in the sun visor’s mirror and was surprised to see that all her makeup was intact. There wasn’t a smidge of mascara or eyeliner running down her cheeks. She hadn’t cried. Jill had always imagined that if there was a day she quit Lane & Shaw or was fired, that she would bawl her eyes out for an entire week. She hadn’t ever wanted to live a future without Lane & Shaw. The firm had become her identity. At that moment, Jill finally understood the meaning of the word “epiphany.”

“I should’ve expected it. I mean, I knew right off the bat this was going to happen.” Jill flipped the sun visor up and looked at the road ahead.

“So, I know you probably aren’t in the mood to hear this but I gotta say—you’re really sexy when you’re all pissed off.”

Chris grinned at the road ahead of him as his hand found Jill’s to give it a comforting squeeze. Jill looked down and smiled in spite of herself at Chris’s rough hand overtaking hers.

“In fact—I look forward to seeing you pissed off more in the future.”

Jill laughed as Chris attempted to change lanes. “Well then, you, my friend, are in for a treat. ‘Pissed off’ is my go-to emotion lately.”

Chris shook his head. “Nah, that’s not true. This is the first I’ve seen of your claws, anyway.” He drummed his thumbs on the steering wheel in frustration as a green station wagon inched its way ahead of them just to come to a complete stop.

“Goddamit. I hate New York traffic.” Chris took his hand away from the wheel to pinch his nose in aggravation.

“See? It’s easy to be pissed off here. If it’s not the traffic, it’s entitled douchebags stealing your promotion and then somehow working it into their vows.” Jill shook her head. “I’m sorry… I really don’t want to seem—oh what’s the phrase?” Jill searched her brain for an often used phrase by Lilly that fit perfectly into this situation. “Oh—” Jill snapped her fingers, “butthurt. I don’t want to seem butthurt by the whole thing.”

Chris laughed. “Well, you did just get screwed out of something that you were working toward for years. I would think it was strange if you weren’t bitching and moaning the whole ride home, to be honest.”

Jill playfully punched Chris in the arm. “Actually, I think I’m over the whole thing.” Jill smiled. “It feels nice.”

“So what now, baby doll? Over the past few weeks, I’ve gotten kind of used to you ordering me around.” Chris scratched his chin in thought. “I don’t think ‘fucking an unemployed lady all day’ will count towards my pro-bono requirement, but hey, it’s the twenty-first century!”

Jill fought the urge to make a “pro-boner” joke and instead slapped Chris’s knee.

“Hey! Just because I’m not with Prick & Asshole anymore doesn’t mean I’m going to be sitting around all day in a bathrobe, watching talk shows and eating canned lasagna...” Jill drifted off for a moment. “Actually that does sound nice…”

Chris laughed so hard he snorted. “Well, whatever you do—I mean, I know it’s only been a few weeks…”

“What are you mumbling about?” Jill asked playfully.

“I’m just trying to say I’m here—I’m here to support you. I like you a lot, Jill. You’re the first person I’ve ever been with where everything feels right, you know?”

Jill smiled. “Well, I’ve wanted to open my own practice for a while now…”

“Uh-huh, sounds good…” Chris smiled encouragingly at Jill.

“And I kinda fell in love with Vermont recently.” Jill looked nervously at Chris.

Chris fell silent for what seemed like an hour. “So you want to move from New York City to the Vermont farmlands and open your own legal practice?”

Jill was so surprised at herself she didn’t even hear Chris’s question. The words had tumbled out of her mouth before her brain even had a chance to process them. She reasoned that being back in New York must have been a shock to her newly awakened spirit. A side effect of her shock must be an absent filter. Jill smiled—these were definitely Lilly-influenced thoughts.

“Uh—Jill? Baby doll?” Chris brought Jill out of her trance and back into the cozy interior of her Honda.

“What? Yes. Oh sorry—I had a moment there.” Jill rubbed her eyes. “I mean, I don’t want to move immediately, but I don’t know. There’s something about that place that—I don’t know, just sort of filled something in me that I was missing, you know? Plus, I can finally say ‘fuck off’ to products liability cases, and oh—I don’t know…” Jill shot a look over at Chris. “Maybe try to get into animal advocacy or environmental preservation—it’s stupid, I know.”

Chris’s face was starting to contort—but Jill couldn’t tell if he was about to smile or grimace. A moment later his face split into an amused grin.

“You want to know what’s stupid?” he asked.

Jill cocked her head at him in anticipation.

“Not doing all that.” Chris’s grin was starting to grow.

“Want to know something else?” Chris was starting to look sly—like he was masking a huge secret.

“Do tell.” Jill was starting to get suspicious. She’d never been much of a guessing game fan.

“I filled out an application to transfer to Vermont Law. I had it all set to go, and I was going to send it in—but the day I was going to submit it was, well…”

Jill raised her eyebrows as Chris.

“Was the day we met. I could have sent it that night, but something was stopping me. Well, actually—it was the thought of winning the sex lottery and being able to fuck you that was stopping me. I know, I’m an old softie.”

Chris smiled his crooked smile at Jill. “Well, not where it counts.”

“I’ll say.” Jill sat back in her seat. “You didn’t send the application because of me? I can’t believe that.”

Chris’s smile was plastered on his face now. Jill honestly didn’t know his mouth could reach that high. “I can’t believe that you want to move there…I mean, if this isn’t a sign, I really don’t know what is.”

Chris’s manic smile proved contagious. Before she knew it, Jill’s own cheeks were starting to hurt from a wide grin spreading across her face. Suddenly, as though Lilly was communicating with her telepathically, Jill had a thought.

“Do you have any time off coming up?”

Chris sucked his teeth in thought. “Hmm… yeah, next weekend, actually. Why? What have you got planned now?”

“My best friend lives on a commune in Vermont. They have sort of bed and breakfast thing going on at Jayberry Farms. I have an open invitation and I don’t know—I mean, if you’re up for spending a weekend sans shower?” Jill let her hand fall on Chris’s. “If you’re not into it though, I totally get it.”

Chris turned down Jill’s block, narrowly avoiding a fully uniformed bicyclist.

“Hmm… go to a free lovin’ commune with you and have an excuse not to shower for a few days? Escape this godawful traffic and random Lance Armstrong clones?”

Chris pulled up to the curb and turned off the car. He put his chin in his hands and pretended to mull over Jill’s request.

“Or stay here and deal with the upcoming midtown fair and subsequent tourists?”

He looked over at Jill, who was patiently awaiting his answer.

“Yes—yes, yes. I would love to go. My mom has been all over me to let Serena spend a weekend with her anyway.”
/>   Jill clapped her hands. “Oh, yes! This is gonna be so much fun, I promise!”

“Can I just ask—what other surprises are in store for me? I mean, I thought I had you figured out, Devlin,” Chris asked as he and Jill exited her car.

Jill smiled as the still very clear image of Jade’s breasts popped into her head.

“Oh—you’ll see,” she responded playfully. “As long as you’re up for it.”

“Baby,” Chris said, holding his hand out to Jill, “by now you should know that I’m up for anything.”

  * * * *

  “You guys made it!”

Lilly bounded over to Jill’s car and jumped into her best friend’s arms. “Oh my God, who is this gorgeous man?” Lilly whispered into Jill’s ear. “Please tell me you are fucking his brains out all the time or I swear…”

  “Hey, I’m Chris.”

Lilly jumped at the sound of Chris’s voice coming from behind her. Smiling, he held his hand out to Lilly, who had dyed her hair an electric green hue.

“Hi, Chris!” Lilly threw her arms around him and gave a quick squeeze. “Sorry about that—girl talk.”

Chris laughed as he pulled out Jill’s luggage. “Oh, that’s okay. And yes, she’s fucking my brains out all the time.”

As he moved ahead of the two women, Lilly pulled Jill aside. “Love him,” she mouthed. Jill smiled at her friend’s approval. It was the first time that Lilly had approved of a man that Jill had chosen for herself.

“I knew we couldn’t keep you away from the free spirit path,” Lilly said, grabbing Jill’s hand. “Tell me more about how you told off your dickhead boss. I want to picture every detail of your transformation from uptight to all right, all right, all right.”

Jill laughed at Lilly’s McConaughey impression before delving into the whole scene: the wedding, the vows, and the confrontation.

“And, you’ll be happy to know that shortly before I told Mac to go fuck himself that Chris and I fucked in the bathroom.”

Lilly’s face lit up. “Yes! Finally!” She ran up to Chris and jumped on his back in the imp-like way only Lilly could pull off. “Chris! My man—you’ve brought our little lawyer out of her shell, you beautiful lawyer destroyer!”

Lilly hopped off of Chris like a spider monkey and did a professional-grade cartwheel back over to Jill. Chris turned around, completely dazed by Lilly’s acrobatics.

“I think I’m going to like it here,” he said, before turning back to the Jayberry Farms path.

  * * * *

“Look who’s back! And she brought a hot guy with her!”

Lilly opened up the door to a familiar scene. Roscoe, Cooper, and Sandy were all sitting around a low table, playing cards and smoking joints.

“I’m just saying, there’s more to John Waters than meets the eye. I’ve met him, you know.”

Cooper tapped his joint, spreading ash all over the table as Sandy and Roscoe rolled their eyes. Sandy smiled at Jill and Chris and waved as Cooper tried to find a picture of him and John Waters on his phone.

“The lawyer! How’s it going, Matlock?” Roscoe got up from the floor and came over to Jill to offer her a joint, which she hungrily accepted.

“You the law too, buddy?” Roscoe stuck his hand out to Chris. “Or are you more part of the—uh—you know, underground?”

Chris knitted his eyebrows in confusion before spotting a small pile of mushrooms on the table. A wave of realization crossed his face and he smiled.

“Just a student, currently.” Chris took Roscoe’s hand. “But I think it sounds cooler to say that I’m part of the underground.”

“That’s right, man. That’s right.” Roscoe floated back to his seat on the ground.

“We’re doing those later,” Chris whispered into Jill’s ear as he pointed at the mushrooms. “I haven’t done them since before Serena was born. Man, those things make a Dave Matthews concert fun.”

Jill nodded vehemently at Chris and smiled. She was hoping he would be open to the whole Jayberry experience.

Jill was about to ask Lilly if Jade was still at the commune when a lyrical voice floated through the living room from the kitchen.

“Is that the beautiful Jill I hear?” the voice said.

“Speaking of things you’re going to do later…” Lilly quipped from behind Jill.

Jade appeared in the doorless threshold, looking as dream-like and freshly beautiful as the last time Jill saw her.

“I can’t believe you’re back! Does this mean you’re staying?” Jade glided over to Jill and gave her a tight, lingering squeeze.

“Just for the weekend! Oh Jade, this is Chris—my uh…”

  “Boyfriend,” Chris finished for Jill.

Jade smiled and gave him a hug.

“Such a cute couple!” Jill could swear she saw Jade’s gaze travel down to Chris’s rather obvious bulge.

“Why don’t you two stay in my room?” Jade asked, her shining, red-rimmed eyes brightening as she took in Jill’s breasts under her tight white tank top.

Chris looked at Jill as Jade snatched up a small suitcase. “Come. Come with me, you two.” Jill nodded at Chris to let him know it was all right.

They followed Jade to the room where Jill had finally felt alive only a few weeks before. The thick smell of fertilizer mixed with weed filling the hallway brought Jill right back to that stormy night.

“Do you guys mind sharing a bed with me?”

Jade put down the small suitcase and stood to face Jill and Chris. She was wearing a short black dress that almost showed the bottom of her perfect, tanned ass but stopped just short of a full reveal.

Jill glanced at Chris and couldn’t help but be amused at the expression on his face: like a man who was convinced he was being entrapped. Jill had seen this look a lot during her interning days.

Jade held her arms and shivered. “Sorry, I’m a little cold.” She eyed Jill hungrily, who took one more peek at Chris before walking over to Jade. She put her arms around Jade before kissing her neck. Surprised, Jade gave an excited, small moan.

“What the fuck?” Chris dropped the suitcase he was holding. “Am I dreaming?”

Both Jade and Jill giggled. “Remember how you said I always surprise you?” Jill asked Chris, who was now looking more dumbfounded by the minute.

Jade started to kiss Jill’s neck. She slowly made her way down to Jill’s breasts, which were already about to pop out of the tank top. Jill held her hand out to Chris as Jade found a nipple with her tongue.

Chris bit his lip as he watched Jade lick and suck on Jill. He quickly pulled his shirt off and took Jill’s hand.

“Fuck…” Chris started to rub himself as Jade led Jill over to the bed and laid her down. She pulled Jill’s shorts off before plunging her tongue into Jill.

Jill twitched with pleasure as Jade’s tongue flicked her clit slowly but eagerly. Jill could hear Chris unzip his pants behind Jade. She smiled as he came over to her with his rock hard cock almost pulsating with anticipation. Chris licked his lips as he silently absorbed the scene of Jade buried between Jill’s legs. He grabbed Jill’s hand and wrapped her fingers around his cock. With no hesitation, Jill took all of Chris in her mouth.

Chris thrust into Jill’s mouth as she stroked his cock.

“Oh fuck…fuck I love it here,” Chris moaned.

Jill came in Jade’s mouth just as Chris came in hers. She wiped the corner of her mouth before Jade straightened up from the foot of the bed.

“Welcome back,” Jade said mysteriously as she looked in the mirror leaning against the wall. “Are you guys up for a star hike later?”

Jill and Chris had collapsed into a sweaty pile on bed. “Was that a dream?” Chris asked, almost delirious. “Wait, did you say star hike?”

Jade giggled. “Let me know...oh—I’m so happy you’re back!” Jade bounced over to give Jill another hug before floating out of her room, leaving Jill and Chris dazed and confused but intensely happy.

  “What th
e hell is this place?” Chris asked, turning over onto his side. “I mean—I love it…these people are so…weirdly awesome?”

Jill stretched out on Jade’s bed and slipped her hand into Chris’s. “This is a place where you learn to enjoy the ride.”

Well…” Chris squeezed Jill’s hand before kissing it gently. “I think I’m ready to take any ride with you.”
