  Stummle—The mute doorkeep at Magda’s brothel; stumm is the German word for “dumb” (mute), so the name is appropriate and a key to the doorman’s discretion. [PM]

  Sub-Genius—Harry Quarry’s secret pen name, used when composing erotic poetry. [BL]

  Suddfield, Horace—The owner of the South American electric eel and the one who encourages Lord John to participate and grab the tail of the eel—which thereby sends an electric current through more than forty people at Lady Joffrey’s party. [CA]

  Sukie—One of Governor Martin’s servants at the Governor’s Palace in New Bern, she agrees to sneak Claire’s messages out of the palace to Fergus’s printshop. [Ashes]

  Sun Elk (aka Ahkote’ohskennonton)—A jealous Mohawk warrior who covets Emily and marries her sister, Looking at the Sky, just to be near Emily; his wife is later abducted by an enemy tribe, leaving him a single man again. After Ian is forced to leave the tribe, Sun Elk quickly marries Emily and establishes a family with her. Although Emily may still love Ian, the ease with which Sun Elk fathers Emily’s children is a blow to Ian’s self-esteem and something that Sun Elk uses to gloat, causing further friction between Ian and the Mohawk.   Sungi—One of Tsatsa’wi’s sisters at the Cherokee village. [Fiery Cross]

  Susan—A prostitute employed at the MacNabs’ London brothel. [BL]

  Sutherland, Geordie—A young male resident of Fraser’s Ridge, mentioned by a group of young unmarried girls playing a marriage prediction game during Hogmanay at the Big House. [Fiery Cross]

  Sutherland, Lord—A friend of William’s, an officer with the British troops withdrawing from Philadelphia. William asks Sutherland’s groom to tend his horses so that his own groom, Zeb, can go to the surgeon to have a horse bite dressed. [MOBY]

  Swiftest of Lizards (aka Digger)—The Mohawk name given to Emily’s son by Ian, after he declares that he will bless all of her children but the boy is his to name. The Mohawk believe that the boy is the son of Ian’s spirit, though he may or may not be Ian’s biological child. [Echo]

  Sydell, Bernard, Colonel—An elderly commander of Hal’s regiment during his absence, he is strict and crotchety, knows little about his troops, and shows little interest in the men under his command. [PM]

  Sylvie, Mrs.—The madam of a Cross Creek brothel and well acquainted with Ian, she allows Claire to treat her “girls” with penicillin after exposure to someone known to be infected with syphilis. Ian brings the orphans Hermione and Trudy to her to tame and teach them to be maids. [Ashes, Echo, MOBY]

  Symington, Ewart, Colonel—The second regimental colonel, he ranks just below Harry Quarry, who is the first regimental colonel of the Forty-sixth. [BL]

  T

  Talks with Spirits—One of the Montauk Five, a group of twentieth-century Native American purists who disappeared in 1968. [Fiery Cross]

  Talltree, Robert—Cherokee village elder in Tsisqua’s village, he appears astonished by a dazed Jamie’s tale of killing fourteen men on Culloden Moor. Talltree blows smoke from the sacred pipe over Jamie, to cleanse the darkness from his soul and to show respect to the Scottish warrior. [Ashes]

  x Tarleton, Banastre, Lieutenant Colonel—(1754–1833) An ambitious British soldier, his outstanding abilities as a cavalryman and leader allowed him to work his way up through the ranks. Considered ruthless and somewhat cruel to both man and animal, historians gave him the title of “Bloody Ban” and “The Butcher,” due to his actions at the Battle of Waxhaws, where he and his men mercilessly killed the retreating Patriot forces. Prior to this, he has a notable run-in with William over a girl. Having caught sight of Jane and made overtures to her, Tarleton is told that she’s under William’s protection. When William admits that this is the case, Tarleton offers to fight him for the girl—and does. The fight is interrupted by the appearance of Continental soldiers, and the young men part, but no bad blood is in evidence when Tarleton comes to William’s tent the next morning—looking rather the worse for wear—to tell the wounded William that Tarleton has recovered William’s stolen horse. Despite his violent reputation, Tarleton doesn’t hold grudges. [Echo, MOBY]

  Tarleton, Berkeley, Major—The father of Richard Tarleton, Lord John’s ensign during his campaign in Prussia. [SP]

  Tarleton, Richard, Lieutenant—Cousin of Banastre Tarleton, Richard was previously Lord John’s ensign at Crefeld during the Seven Years’ War. [BL, CA, SP, Echo]

  Taylor, Captain—Captain of a lobster fishing boat with a flair for Gaelic cursing, for whom Roger worked when he was a young man in Inverness. [Echo]

  Taylor, Henry, General—A field general of militia, who inconveniently dies just as the British prepare to withdraw from Philadelphia. Knowing a battle is imminent and desperately needing an experienced officer to take charge of Taylor’s miscellaneous militia companies, George Washington gratefully seizes Daniel Morgan’s suggestion that Jamie Fraser succeed Taylor—a suggestion that Jamie is unable to reject, much as he’d like to.   x Teague, Joshua—(ca. 1732–1804) One of the Regulators identified by Waightstill Avery in his deposition before Justice William Harris; he was recognized and excluded from Governor Tryon’s pardon following the Battle of Alamance. [Fiery Cross]

  Tearlach, Prince—See “Charles Stuart.”

  Tebbe—One of Claire’s captors and a member of Hodgepile’s gang of bandits, he believes that Claire holds some sort of spiritual power and tries to protect her from the other members of the group, asking her to remember his kindness so her spirits won’t harm him. [Ashes]

  Teresa—One of Jocasta Cameron’s house slaves. She was caring for Betty, the slave found drunk and doped with laudanum on the evening of Jocasta and Duncan’s wedding, but eventually she has another slave seek out Claire’s assistance. [Fiery Cross]

  Tess—Last legal wife of Toby Quinn, she left him after Culloden, without a divorce. [SP]

  Tewaktenyonh—Sister of war chief and sachem in the Mohawk village where Roger is held captive, she is an elderly woman who befriends Claire and tells her the story of Otter-Tooth. She is also Emily’s grandmother and the one who tells Ian to leave the village after so many failed pregnancies with Emily. [Fiery Cross, Ashes, Echo]

  Tewkes, Peter—A friend of Lord John’s who dies of syphilis while using the mercury treatment for the disease. [PM]

  x Thacher, James, Major—(1754–1844) Prominent surgeon in the Continental army, he wrote several books regarding his experiences treating the wounded during the Revolutionary War. Claire becomes familiar with his work during the Monmouth campaign. [Echo]

  Thackeray, Anne—After her father, a Sussex minister, breaks off her attachment with Philip Lister, she elopes with him instead. The scandal causes her family to disown her; she is left pregnant, alone, and destitute when Lister is killed during war in Prussia. [HS]

  Thackeray, Barbara—Daughter of a Sussex minister, she wishes to help her disowned sister, Anne, and gives Lord John some limited information to help his investigation into Anne’s whereabouts. [HS]

  Thackeray, Reverend Mr.—Father of Barbara and Anne, the girl who eloped with Philip Lister; he disowns his daughter and, rather than taking her and her child in upon Philip’s death, sanctimoniously refuses all contact with her. [HS]

  x Thayendanegea—See “Joseph Brant.”

  Thomas—One of Dougal MacKenzie’s men in 1739, when Dougal is summoned by Angus MacLaren to come and have a look at the two suspicious strangers: Roger and Buck. [MOBY]

  Thomas—A footman at the Jermyn Street home of Benedicta Grey, Lord John’s mother. [PM]

  Thomas—One of Princess von Lowenstein’s footmen. [SU]

  x Thomson, Robert—One of the Regulators identified by Waightstill Avery in his deposition before Justice William Harris. [Fiery Cross]

  x Thynne, Thomas—(1734–1796) Viscount Weymouth, secretary of state (of England) for the Southern Department, responsible for foreign relations with the American colonies as well as with all the Catholic and Muslim c
ountries of Europe—at least until 1768, when relations with the American colonies shifted to the Northern Department. [Echo]

  Tinsdale—The cook on Governor Martin’s ship, the Cruizer. He is a free black man who treats Claire kindly when the governor brings her aboard after fleeing New Bern. [Ashes]

  Tolliver, Doc—One of the physicians working with Claire and Denzell Hunter to treat the wounded Patriots after the battles of Saratoga. [Echo]

  Tolliver, Maisie, Mrs.—The wife of New Bern’s sheriff, she sees to the care of the female prisoners but is also a drunkard and will do almost anything for a price; she summons Claire to be midwife when a prisoner accused of killing her children is giving birth to her latest child. [Ashes]

  Tolliver, Sheriff—The sheriff of New Bern, not very popular but one of the last law-enforcement officers in the area during the state of rebellion, all of the others having fled or been taken by mobs. [Ashes]

  Tomlinson, Mr.—A wealthy member of Parliament. He is married to Susannah, who is unfaithful to him, involved in a love affair with Captain Michael Bates. [BL]

  Tomlinson, Susannah, Mrs.—A married woman and mistress to Captain Bates, who is sentenced to hang for sodomy and treason. [BL]

  x Tomlinson, Turner—(unknown) One of the Regulators in North Carolina. When detained and questioned by Governor Tryon, he admitted nothing except his inclusion as one of the Regulators. [Fiery Cross]

  Tommy—A young slave boy at River Run, Jocasta Cameron’s plantation. [Fiery Cross]

  Townsend, Mr.—A resident of Cross Creek and a visitor at River Run who is robbed by Wendigo Donner, a time traveler; Townsend wants the culprit tried as soon as possible and requests magistrate Farquard Campbell to sit as justice on his behalf. [Ashes]

  x Tracy, Andrew Hodges, Lieutenant—(unknown) An Irish officer from Major Ebenezer Stevens’s artillery battalion. Disguised and purported to be a British spy, Tracy was placed in a cell with a captured British regular to obtain any information on British movements. During a night of jovial conversation, Tracy discovered the location and strength of Burgoyne’s forces, which was then provided to General St. Clair. [Echo]

  Tranter, Will—A locksmith near Lallybroch. Brianna calls him to come and change the locks at the estate, following Rob Cameron’s intrusion, but Tranter leaves a note saying that he’s been delayed on another job. This causes Bree to take the children to Fiona for safekeeping. [MOBY]

  Travers, Howard—Local sheriff of Drunkard’s Creek, who has let the power of his office go to his head, turning a blind eye to crime and instead greedily evicting residents for inability to pay their taxes; once the property is vacant, Travers distributes it as he sees fit—namely, to his family members. [Fiery Cross]

  Trevelyan, Joseph, the Honorable—A Cornish nobleman possessing a large fortune from tin mines, with family connections in Parliament; heavily invested in the East India Company and possibly infected with syphilis. He is also engaged to marry Lord John’s young orphaned cousin, Olivia Pearsall. [PM, BL]

  Trevorson, Squire—Owner of Mayapple Farm and a neighbor to Edgar DeVane. Trevorson’s gunpowder mill comprises one-third of the Sussex consortium headed by Edgar, Lord John’s older stepbrother. [HS]

  Trowbridge, Mr.—Lord Dunsany’s solicitor living in Bowness-on-Windermere, he was chosen to handle the matter of Lord John’s guardianship of William, the Ninth Earl of Ellesmere, due to a conflict of interest with the Dunsanys’ local solicitor. [SP]

  x Tryon, William, Governor—(1729–1788) Royal governor of the colony of North Carolina and an important ally—or dangerous foe—to Jamie and Claire Fraser; he charges Jamie with the task of forming a militia to support the British during the War of the Regulation. [Fiery Cross, Ashes]

  Tsatsa’wi—Peter Bewlie’s Cherokee brother-in-law, who indicates that Jamie, “Bear-Killer,” and Claire, “White Raven,” will have the power to kill the mystical white bear terrorizing his village and people. [Fiery Cross]

  Tsisqua—See “Bird-who-sings-in-the-morning.”

  x Tullibardine, Earl of—(1689–1746) William Murray, second son of the Duke of Atholl, was a Jacobite supporter of Charles Stuart and the Rising but was later executed and excluded from succession for his participation. [SP]

  Tweedledum & Tweedledee—Claire’s nicknames for the chairmen (apparently brothers) who carry Hal’s sedan chair in Philadelphia. [MOBY]

  Twelvetrees, Edward—One of three brothers who have had entanglements with the Grey brothers several times in the past; Edward is killed in a London duel by Lord John. [SP, PZ]

  Twelvetrees, Nancy; Nan—Sister to Philip Twelvetrees, she had been courted in London by Derwent Warren, who set her aside for an heiress. She went to Jamaica with her brother to get over the upset, only to find that Warren was the new governor for the island. [PZ]

  Twelvetrees, Nathaniel—A former captain of the Thirty-second Foot. He backed a wager at White’s indicating that Gerard Grey, the Duke of Pardloe, was indeed a traitor. Twelvetrees later died in a duel with the duke’s son, Hal, after Hal discovered that Twelvetrees had seduced his wife, Esmé. [BL, CA, SP, PZ]

  Twelvetrees, Philip—The new owner of a Jamaican plantation, previously owned by his recently deceased cousin, Edward Twelvetrees. [PZ]

  Twelvetrees, Reginald, Colonel—Assigned to the Royal Artillery regiment with very influential friends, he was one of the three members of the military tribunal investigating Lord John’s part in the explosion of a cannon during the Battle of Crefeld; there are extenuating hostilities between the Grey family and the Twelvetrees family—namely that Hal, Lord John’s older brother, killed the colonel’s younger brother Nathaniel in a duel several years prior.   Two Spears—The Mohawk war chief of the village where Roger was held captive and the one who ordered Father Alexandre to be burned at the stake. [Echo]

  U

  Ulysses (aka Joseph)—Jocasta Cameron’s butler and her secret lover for over twenty years. He was born a freeman, enslaved as a child, and renamed “Ulysses” by the schoolmaster who purchased him. An educated man, fluent in French and English and able to read both Greek and Latin, he becomes the eyes and keeper of secrets for his mistress when she loses her sight. Although she has never seen his face, Jocasta says that he smells like light. [Fiery Cross, Ashes]

  Uncle Joe—See “Dr. Joseph Abernathy.”

  Uncle Lamb—See “Quentin Lambert Beauchamp.”

  Unwin, the Misses—The Quaker daughters of Mr. Unwin; William met them once, at a musicale, although neither religion nor philosophical differences were discussed. [Echo]

  Unwin, Mr.—A wealthy merchant and head of a Quaker family in Virginia, with whom William is acquainted because they are friends of Lord John. [Echo]

  Unwin, Priscilla—A London acquaintance of both Lady Dorothea and Dr. Denzell Hunter. [Echo]

  x Urmstone, the Reverend Mr.—(ca. 1685–1772) John Urmstone was one of the earliest Anglican ministers in North Carolina, arriving prior to 1710; he was originally a missionary in the Ablemarle area and preached on the sins of man, often targeting specific members of the congregation as examples of sinful behavior. [Fiery Cross]

  V

  van Humperdinck, Henryk, Dr.—A London doctor specializing in mental issues, especially depression. He is found near death in the street outside White’s, where patrons are busy taking bets regarding the victim’s prognosis rather than seeking help. After John is wounded in Prussia, Lord and Lady Stanley urge him to consult with Humperdinck regarding his lingering depression, but they tell John that the doctor is a chest specialist. [BL]

  Venus—An ill-tempered pony used by the Dunsanys to pull the pony trap, a small two-wheeled carriage. [SP]

  x Vergennes, Monsieur—(1717–1787) French foreign minister during the American Revolution and a silent partner in the Hortalez et Cie company, which was really a front for supplying the Americans with arms and ammunition. [Echo]

  Vermin/Trudy; Ermintrude Kuykendall—One of two young ragamuffin boys who a
ttempt to rob the Frasers on their way to New Bern; Ian is nominated to try to locate their relatives near Bailey Camp. During the journey, it’s discovered that the “boys” are actually girls in disguise; when Ian can’t find any relations of the children, he takes them to Mrs. Sylvie’s brothel in Cross Creek and pays her to “tame” the girls and make them housemaids. He later encounters Ermintrude and her sister, Hermione, as the Wurm brothers, at Beardsley’s trading post. (See also “Herman/Hermione Kuykendall.”) [Echo]

  Vickers, Mr.—A pink-cheeked young man about eighteen years old, one of Governor Tryon’s aides-de-camp at Alamance. The governor directs him to assist Claire in carrying buckets of water; he’s later dispatched to fetch the governor’s horse after Jamie’s Highland screech causes it to rear, unseating the governor. [Fiery Cross]

  Visigoth; Goth—One of William’s horses. A massive gelding, Goth carries William to battle at Monmouth. When William is thumped over the head and thrown off a bridge by Hessian mercenaries, Goth goes missing but is retrieved by Banastre Tarleton, who returns him to William. [MOBY]

  x Voltaire—(1694–1778) Born François-Marie Arouet, he was a French philosopher, writer, and frequent guest of intellectual salons in France during the Enlightenment period of the eighteenth century; he was also in attendance at the salon Jamie attends in Paris with Mr. Lyles. [Echo]

  x von Knyphausen, Wilhelm, General—(1716–1800) Commander of a body of Hessian troops under the overall command of Sir Henry Clinton. Von Knyphausen’s troops were to help protect refugees and provide additional support to Clinton’s troops during the British withdrawal from Philadelphia and thus took part in the subsequent Battle of Monmouth, when Washington’s troops pursued and attacked the retreating British army.
