Blade of the Fae Page 32

by R. A. Rock

Tessa turned back to look at the beauty that lay spread out before them, a peace entering her soul that she hadn’t felt in a long time. She was no longer employed by either the Dark Court or the Light Court.

She didn’t know where that left her, but she knew that she was free.

“Time to go,” she said with a small sigh. “We still have work to do. This is only the beginning.”

Finn took her hand with a smile, kissing the back of it.

“Where you go, I will follow,” he said, repeating the words that the man in the Direwood had said before he exploded from merging magic.

“That is a terrible plan,” Tessa said with a laugh.

“Definitely,” Finn said, hooking her arm through his. “But I think I’ll stick with you anyways. Somebody’s got to keep you from getting killed.”

As the sun disappeared over the edge of the world, Tessa and Finn walked side by side, back down the mountain and toward their destiny.

  Author Note

  Hello dear readers,

I hope you have enjoyed Blade of the Fae. This book was truly a labour of love. And I appreciate that you are reading this Author’s Note, because not everybody does. Since you have decided to spend some more time with me, I will give you some behind the scenes info about the book — and me.

First of all, I am a major fan of adventure. And books have always been my way to get some because I am not exactly adventurous in real life. And when I get to make up the adventure, that’s even more fun. I love kickass heroines who decide their own fates and don’t need saving. And heroes who kick ass but also have a softer side.

I’ve always enjoyed weapons, fight scenes, and the training that goes into becoming a good and disciplined fighter. I took karate and kickboxing for some time when I was younger and that always informs my hand to hand combat scenes. I also watch clips from movies to get realistic sequences of moves.

The Unity Blades, which are karambits, were inspired by a woman I follow on Instagram, who posted a video of her flipping them (and getting cut), which I thought was super cool (except the slitting your wrists part). So, when I needed a unique weapon, I decided to use the curved blades. I watched many a movie clip to see how they would be used in fighting, to be able to write the scenes with the Unity Blades realistically.

Magic. I love magic. I love it so, so much. And as you might imagine, writing a book about magic has been a lot of fun. Most of my previous work was in sci fi, which explains the unexplainable with science. In these books, I enjoy being able to explain it with magic.

Inventing curse words. This was amusing. And new ones keep popping up in subsequent books. Some of my favourites are the harshest swear, ‘Shadows take me’, which seems far too pretty to be a curse word. Another one I like is what is supposed to be a replacement for the word ‘damn’, which is shadow-cursed. The ritual farewell words in the Dark Court are sort of creepy and make me shiver… May the Shadows hide you. What in the Chasm? That’s another fun one.

  Anyway.

Many of what you might have thought were made up words come from Irish Gaelic. I’ve always loved the Celtic legends and I’ve tried to weave some of that into the story (more to come in subsequent books).

Now, what was difficult about writing these books? One of the things was actually using the made up curse words, which don’t seem to have a strong enough feel to them sometimes to convey the appropriate emotion. Another thing is that it’s really hard to set up high stakes for someone who’s immortal. I would write myself into a corner and then say, Stars Alive, they’re only functionally immortal so they can’t even die without great difficulty. Chasm and Severance, how can I even make this exciting without threatening their lives? Fortunately for me, there are many things worse than death.

Also, making up monsters I found difficult and my teenage son helped me with the Char’s powers. I did invent the Skransser, though.

So, at the end of the story, they accomplish their goal but find out there’s more to do. I hope that made you happy. Yay, more adventures! There’s a much larger story that’s unfolding than Tess and Finn realize right now. And this book is only the beginning. Yay, more Fae! (Ha. That rhymed.) (Totally unintentional but if I could have planned it, I would have.)

I hope you’ll join me on the next adventure: Crown of Visions. This second book is all about the famed Hundred Years Ball, which is a week long party. Yay, Faeries revelling! That’s got to be fun. Except that Tess and Finn are going to be trapped with the King and Dark Queen, who are super pissed with them. Uh oh. All they have to do is avoid capture and find a magical object that no one has been able to find for thousands of years and everyone is now looking for. No problem.

If you’ve enjoyed this book, please consider giving it some book love by leaving a review that will help other readers. Sometimes we forget that books need love too. No doubt the Stars will light your way forever if you do.

Thank you so much for reading and as they say in Ahlenerra…

May the Stars shine their light upon you.

  Sincerely,

  R. A. Rock

  About The Author

When I was in grade two, my well-meaning teacher told me that I overused the word nice in my writing. As you can imagine, my younger self was both irritated and insulted. Somehow my eight-year-old brain thought that nice was the perfect adjective to describe… well, just about everything, I suppose. And anyways who was she to tell me how to write? If I wanted to use the word nice, I was darn well going to use it.

Fast-forward thirty-three years and my stories are anything but nice, perhaps in reaction to that very first criticism. I like to write about what people do when terrible things occur. Hm. What would these characters do if the worst thing they can possibly imagine… happened? Let’s put them in that situation and see. I love magic and mystery, action and adventure, fight scenes, and sweet moments, too. And I’m all about taking the reader along for the ride. So, I hope you’ll come along on this magical adventure. I can’t wait to see where it leads! (I hope it’s someplace nice.)
