This Obsession of Mine (Raine Series #5) Page 15

by Amanda Bennett

I squeezed Diem’s hand tightly in mine. I wanted to turn around and threaten her. Tell her that she needed to leave my family alone or I would pay someone to take her out, but I didn’t. Diem gently squeezed my hand in return and whispered, “She’ll be taken care of.” All I could do was smile.

When we got out to my truck, I tossed Diem in the cab and made my way around to the driver’s side. It was my last day before training camp, and I was determined to make the most of my time. I started the truck and took off over the bridge. I had quite the plan in motion, and I couldn’t wait to get back to Diem’s house. We’d been spendin’ all of our time there lately as I got to know her friends, and I was able to get them on board with my plan as well.

“Only a short while longer.” I smiled as I pulled her close to my side.

  “Oh yeah?”

“Yeah. I promise, you won’t want to miss it.” Just then, her cell phone rang and I could see the picture of her dad light up on her phone. “Just answer it. Don’t you think it’s been long enough?”

“You’re right. Hi Daddy.” I smiled knowin’ that it was time for them to get their relationship back on track. “What? When? No. No. No.” Diem’s phone clattered to the floor as her head fell over onto her lap.

I could hear her sobbin’, but every word was incoherent. I made it across the bridge and pulled over as soon as I could, and took her into my arms. “What happened? Diem? Diem, answer me.”

“I have to get home. Dad has been in an accident.”

  Oh this couldn’t be good.

The Raine Series will conclude with This Family of Ours COMING October 2016
