To the teens who are experiencing homelessness or fear at home: You matter. Your life is important and there are people who want to help. You can reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline at thehotline.org or 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
This book wouldn’t be possible without the incredible Sourcebooks Fire team, especially my brilliant editor Annette Pollert-Morgan, who helps me find my way through even through the muddiest manuscripts. And to my wise and supportive agent, Suzie Townsend, who has a knack for knowing when to lend a hand and how to keep me on course. I am a better writer because of both of you.
I’m blessed to work with some of the greatest library folks I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. To Jen, for understanding my Bowie feels and for always shooting straight; to Heather, for bringing me smiles, hugs, and forty-two million cups of coffee; and of course, to Ben, who deals with an abundance of sass and squawk, and who really is both a treasure and a delight.
The construction of my books is an ugly process that wouldn’t be possible without daily phone calls and frantic last-minute edits with Jody Casella, who still tells me to calm down and to go take a walk. And to Romily Bernard, who can reach in to pull me out of even my darkest places. Thank you. There are so many writers that support me in countless ways. Thank you Margaret Peterson Haddix, Linda Gerber, Julia Devilers, Lisa Klein, Erin McCahan, Edith Pattou, and Mindee Arnett.
There are lots of other folks who help along the way too. Thanks to Leigh Anne for always cheering me on and Sharon for being my angel with sage advice and coconut cake. And of course, to my incredible, supportive readers. Thank you for your lovely reviews, your kind emails, and for having a knack for reaching out on days when it’s just too hard.
I always thank my family at the end, because none of this begins without love and support at home. Dad, thank you for leaving your voice in my heart and your stubbornness in my soul. I miss you. David, thank you for your endless patience with often ridiculous writing hours. We’ve certainly been through the trenches, you and me. And to Ian, Adrienne, Lydia: All the books in the world wouldn’t hold enough words for how grateful I am for you. I love you.
