Dark Night Page 6

by Stefany Rattles

“Yes. But it’s too strong for just two bites. It doesn’t make sense.” He looked frustrated, irritated and confused. He had his hands in his pockets and he was standing a few feet away from me staring at the floor the whole time he spoke.

“I’m new at this, so I don’t know what you’re talking about but I can tell you exactly what was going on with me if you want to know, I don’t know if that would help you understand whatever it is you’re not getting but if you do please tell me, I’d like to know.”

“It’s not that just…. Look, we’ll talk about this later. We need to do the tour before the ball and it’s getting late and… you might want to change.” He pointed at a spot of blood on my dress.

“Great! I liked this dress.” I heard him make a noise when I walked to the bathroom. I picked a different dress that was my second choice. It was light brown and it also had the design of Virgo. It was slightly shorter but it had transparent long sleeves I liked. I guess I could deal with that. I put it on quickly and made sure my hair wasn’t messed up. I caught my reflection in the mirror and noticed, my skin was looking different, it was getting whiter and my hair was silkier.

I left the same shoes and accessories on, they also matched this dress. I walked out of the bathroom and saw Robert waiting by the front door, with his back to me. He heard me getting closer and opened the door without a word. We walked in silence, until we were at the first floor.

“You already know where the main dining area is and the garden. This is all part of the dorms.” We went through a black door and walked outside we crossed a small bridge that was over a pond. “This is the main school. Your friends can show you inside tomorrow morning… it’s locked right now.” He said dryly while I was looking at the huge building a few yards away. “We have an indoor pool, it’s by the garden and the Dining area of the school, easy to find. We also have two gyms, one with weights and the main gym they are right there.” He pointed at a building between the school and the dorms. “ And the college student dorms are on the other side of campus, you don’t really need to know much about them since you won’t be going there for another year, but just in case you were wondering.“ He scratched his head and sighed. “That’s it. We’re done.” He still didn’t look at me. he was still trying to ignore me. He was just doing his job, I could understand that, but I didn’t have to like his attitude.

“You are such an ass! God, I didn’t know you disliked me that much, or that my blood was nasty in any way but you don’t have to act like that. I get it… I’ll take my chances with the stupid needles okay. Who cares right? Jesus!” I stomped off and left him standing there looking like an idiot. He was probably not expecting that and the fact that I caught him off guard was definitely why he didn’t say anything back. I knew the way back inside, I think. I retraced my way in and found the main hall, it took me some time but Robert didn’t bother follow me or even help, in fact I didn’t know where he was now. Probably another way in… Who cares? I ran into Mereily on the way to my room.

“Mia, you changed?” She looked at my dress and nodded, liking my choice. “Never mind that, we need to go up to my room and start getting ready for the ball it’s at six and we have little time.” Mereily said, I smiled as a reply and followed her to her room.

“My room is down the hall.” I told her.

“Yeah I already went to look for you earlier…. and you weren’t there. Why is your room the only one on that wing?”

I knew she would ask. “I don’t know. I think it’s because of Robert.”

“That is why. Duh, I forgot about him. Oh. Did he show you the school?”

“Yeah, from the outside, he said it was locked.”

She frowned. “No. it’s not. The library and the computer lab are in there, they never close. Just in case students want to do some extra studying,” She told me like I didn’t know. “Must’ve forgotten,” She shrugged and went on talking about her teachers and what not. I couldn’t believe what he had done. He didn’t want to spend any alone time with me anymore, so if that was the way he wanted it, so be it.

I was babbling mindlessly without even noticing when Sophie came in the room. Their room was smaller. They had less space but the same things. “Hey, I just got my dress. It’s awesome!” Sophie was holding a box that she laid on a bed and she opened carefully, to show us. Yeah, her dress was pretty. Then, Mereily went to her armoire and took hers out to show it off too. Sophie’s was a creamy color, long and it shined in the light.

“What do you think?” Mereily’s dress was long too. But hers’ was violet and it would look good on her because of her skin color and her bright eyes.

“It’s beautiful. Both are.” I didn’t want to make either feel bad.

“Where’s your dress?” Sophie asked me looking at the dress I was wearing. Thinking about it, I realized how different mine looked from their’s and wondered why that was.

“Oh. In my room, you guys want to come with me, and get ready in my room?” They smiled and said yes. We walked down the hall, where we heard music blearing from a room, and turned to my own little narrow hall where my room was the only one there. I opened the door and let them In first.

“Oh my god, it’s huge!” Mereily looked around like she was entering into her first apartment, Sophie wide eyes, walked and stood in the middle looking around like a little girl would, which she kind of was.

“Huge. Is an understatement,” Sophie told her.

“I’ll trade you any day.” I said low enough for them not to hear. “The bathroom is this way.” I got their attention and they followed. They went into the restroom. “I forgot my dress.” I said remembering how I had left it by the bed, I heard them awing and while I had gone back into the room to get the dress when I saw Robert coming out of his bathroom. I grabbed my box and ignored him.

“Getting ready?” He asked as I was walking towards the bathroom.

I turned back around and stared at him for a second. He was already wearing his tuxedo, he looked even better, I felt like melting. But I snapped out of it before I did something I would regret. He was just so damn gorgeous that it was hard to look at him in the eyes. But I did.

“Yeah, with some friends so we don’t have to be alone, you know.” I said as I was leaving him then I stopped. “Oh. By the way the school is not locked, just so you know next time you want to give a tour you don’t disappoint them.” And I joined the girls in the closet, where I found them snooping around looking through my clothes. “Here’s my dress.” I took it out and hanged it.

“It’s amazing, Mia that’s like the kind of dress only royalty wear.”

“What? You mean, not everybody wears dresses like that?” I was shocked to hear this. I had thought everybody wore basically whatever dress, but I thought wrong.

“No way, only royalty, like Gene and her cousins and others.” Sophie said unhappy.

“What do you mean by royalty?” I didn’t know what they were talking about, but I had an idea at the mention of Genevieve‘s name.

“Only if you are related to the King and Queen or the Lords,” Sophie continued.

“That’s real Bull.” Mereily’s tone was of disappointment.

“What is?” I asked her, hoping she wasn’t upset with me.

“Robert is my second cousin, and I am not royalty.” My jaw dropped opened and I looked at her, really looked. And couldn’t believe that Robert was her cousin, he was nothing like her.

“Well, I’m definitely not related to any of them. So why did they give me that dress?”

“Maybe you are, you just haven’t got the chance to meet anyone yet.” Mereily said she wasn’t mad anymore just slightly upset.

“Mereily, I’m sorry. I won’t wear it if it’ll make you feel better. I don’t want to be part of no royalty, it’s all crap if they’re being unfair.” I honestly couldn’t believe how the system worked here, so I was shocked to hear what Mereily had said. I would have given her the dress but I didn’t want to get in
trouble for it.

“No. You’re wearing the dress and you’re gonna be the bomb. It’s not your fault, they’re unfair but that’s not your problem okay?” She smiled.

“If you say so but cheer up, or I’ll make a fool out of myself in front of everyone.” The girls giggled.

We got dressed and ready. My gown looked incredible, I didn’t want to wear my hair up, neither did the girls but we knew everyone else was going to leave it down, because it was just uncomfortable in a ponytail or anything like that. Sophie decided to pull it sideways putting a diamond clip to hold it. Her hair was already curly but she made her dark curls bigger and it looked so gorgeous. Mereily, pulled back her bangs, she teased it to give it a fresh look and added sparkling beads throughout her hair like a spider web, she left hers’ straight. It still looked like it took hours to get it to look like she did. I, on the other hand pinned it up the sides and didn’t necessarily curl it but only enough to make waves and I used pearl diamond clips to add more personality. All three of us looked fabulous! like Mereily says. I decided to go more natural with my makeup, using the usual plus adding extra eyeliner and a neutral light eye shadow and mascara. I didn’t want to stand out and I encouraged Mereily and Sophie to be more dramatic with theirs. When I looked at the time it was already five-thirty-eight. We decided to grab some snacks and drinks from the kitchen and sit and watch some TV. The girls liked MTV better. And that’s what we watched, while we waited.

Sophie went to the restroom, and I didn’t trust her enough yet to tell her what I was going to tell Mereily. “ I promised to not say anything but I have to tell someone, and you’re the only person I trust.” I turned to Mereily and confessed. She was the only person I could trust because I was alone.

“Tell me, what’s wrong?” She asked concerned.

“I… bonded with Robert… it was an accident I don’t know we just liked it, I guess and now we can’t tell anybody, we’re stuck together.” I wanted to cry but I was holding it in. I just felt better telling someone about it.

“Oh my god, earlier when I came looking for you I saw you guys, just a glimpse, the door wasn’t closed all the way. But I didn’t think anything of it. I just thought you were getting the V2.”

I was embarrassed at the thought of her walking in on us and having to watch that. “I was, but then it got a little out of hand and….” I looked away, ashamed of myself.

“That is odd. Can you feel it?” She asked more curious.

“Right now? Yes, I can still feel him. I try to block it but I can’t.” I was miserable for dragging her into it I haven’t been here a day I was already in problems (like Genevieve had said). It’s just my life.

“You shouldn’t though, in class I learned that you only feel it if you touch it’s like a you are both one and its very intense, but if you’re not touching you shouldn’t be able to feel it. Only full vampires do, or those who are close to turning into one.” Obviously she knew what she was talking about, and I wasn’t about to doubt her word, that worried me.

“Robert is going to be one soon.” I pointed out.

“Yes, but not just him. Both sides would need to be turning close to being full for that to happen.” We heard Sophie opening the door and gave each other a quiet look.

“After the ball, could we talk?” I whispered.

“Definitely,” She whispered back right before Sophie joined us.

“What’s all the fuss about?” She asked, sitting back down.

“Uh, Nothing, I was just telling her about that cutie you like, what was his name?” Mereily answered quickly.

“Kevin, I don’t like him. I love him.” She corrected her and blushed.

“Yeah, he’s one of the royals and they tend to stick together, you’ll notice at the ball…. Oh crap it’s time!” Mereily jumped up and pulled us with her. “Come on guys.” She dragged us out the door. We had to walk slowly, our dresses were one reason and the crowd of people walking down the stairs was another. It looked like the red carpet and that was nothing compared to this. I saw maybe two other girls wearing dresses similar to mine, of course theirs were a different color and style within the same style (if that makes any sense). We got to the bottom of the stairs when I heard someone shout.

“Everyone have a blast!” Genevieve screamed and let out a devilish laugh.

“I don’t know why you like her, she’s evil.” I joked, and made Sophie laugh.

Mereily faked a giggle, “She’s stuck up sometimes, but once you really get to know her she’s very___”

“Shallow, and stubborn,” Sophie interrupted her, I laughed at that.

Finally we went in and our mouths fell open. “They just keep getting better, and better.”

  ROBERT

Genevieve was flirting with Jack McKey, a senior. She hadn’t noticed me entering the Dining room, Jack however did. He nodded to me and Genevieve turned to look, her attitude completely changed, she left Jack and his friends by a table they were about to take and walked towards me.

She was wearing the typical royal gown, it was definitely her type, red and black with a hint of white, long and form fitted. She smiled and came to a stop directly in front of me. “Hey, we were just talking about you, handsome.” She barely kissed me on the lips. “You wanna join us?”

  “Us?” I asked.

“Them, us? Why does it matter? Robbie you’re not jealous are you?” She asked taking hold of my hand.

I really wasn’t, the only reason why that upset me was because I was trying to have a relationship with Genevieve, but she wasn’t helping throwing herself at other men. I felt nothing towards her being flirtatious with others, but it was just dangerous and she knew it. “I guess a little.” I lied to play the part. We both knew what game we were playing and we had to try and do it right, I had always known she had a thing for Jack and he was a nice guy. Sometimes the thought of not being with her, was like heaven. “How about we get our own table?” The idea of having those two all over each other in public just wasn’t going to work for us.

Genevieve talked about herself of course, for what seemed like an eternity. About fifteen minutes had passed, more people were starting to come in and the noise level was going up. Suddenly music started playing from the speakers on-what was-the stage. Denise, one of Genevieve’s friends came to sit by our table and started chattering away. She was as annoying as Gene, but that was why she was friends with her and others just like them two. Someone tapped my shoulder interrupting my thoughts.

“Hey, how are you doing’?” Kevin, another senior asked, taking a sit at my left side.

“Fine and you?” I asked to be courteous, Kevin and I had been close friends He and I had been roommates a few months ago before I had to go to England. Now and then we talked occasionally but we were not best buddies by any means.

“Just enjoying the view, you know.” He playfully punched my arm and let out a dark laugh.

“You never change.” Kevin was not a ladies man, more like a douche bag. But girls were always sticking to him like super glue. I just did not understand it.

“Gotta have fun dude... You should try it sometime and maybe you wouldn’t be so damn uptight all the time.” He said it with sarcasm, but I let it go as soon as Mia walked in the room, she caught my undivided attention.

“Really? The new chick? Bro, go for it.” Kevin was saying and Genevieve heard him, she had stopped talking to her friends to pay attention to me, I glanced at her feeling guilty and glared at Kevin. He shrugged and stood up to leave. “Whatever.” He walked off leaving me to hear Gene’s mouth. I waited but she didn’t say a word, she simply smiled at me and stood up and then she was off to… she was walking towards Mia.

  CHAPTER 8

  MIA

I had never been in a place like this, it was incredible. What I had seen in the morning was nothing. They had added a bunch of other things. More decorations, from the tables to the ceiling and the lighting made an incredible effect from the decorations. The da
nce floor which was not there earlier it was now full of people dancing to a current song I didn’t know. It was a ball but they were not going completely old school. It was more elegant than anything I’d ever seen. This was a commencement, the end of one thing, and beginning of another for me.

“Let’s go mingle.” Mereily said, “You have to get to know everyone, just stay away from certain people.” she whispered.

“Like Genevieve.” Sophie added, and Mereily sighed.

“Let’s try to enjoy this, please,” Mereily smiled awkwardly.

“Hey girls what’s going on?” Some girls that had been staring finally came to us.

“Lana, Layla, Yasmin, this is Mia. And Mia this is Lana and Layla they’re twins. And this is Yasmin she’s graduating this year.”

“Hey.” I was going to try to have a little fun tonight, if it was possible.

  “Hi.” They all waved.

“Did I miss something?” Genevieve walked up to us. “What the hell?” She said as she stared at my dress. “Who made you one of us?”

“I’m not part of anything. It’s just a dress.” I told her, I wasn’t yelling at her or anything, I was trying to be even nice to her.

“It is not just a dress! You don’t know anything, stupid skank!” She yelled at me. I wasn’t going to take her crap especially tonight that I wanted to meet everyone and enjoy this.

“What the hell is your problem? I’m not dealing with you. Don’t you have something better to do?” I said to her getting in her face, she gave me an evil smile and slowly turned away.

She glared straight at me. “Watch your back, no one messes with me.” She said walking away.

“Whatever little girl,” I said loud enough for her to hear, still she pretended she didn’t. I didn’t care. Anyway I shook that off and kept on with the evening. “Uh… where were we? Right, I’m Mia I don’t know what you’ve heard about me but I’m certainly not a skank like your friend seems to think. I don’t want to be part of anything here, if you must know I was brought against my own will and I don’t appreciate when people start assuming things. I didn’t ask for this. But it is very nice and all how I’ve been treated, and is very nice meeting all of you. I’d be happy to answer any questions that you have.” I was surrounded by more people now, most were smiling and waving a few just listened and pretended I didn’t say anything, turned around and left. The remaining people introduced themselves one by one and were surprised to hear that it was my first day here. Some said, usually they would not let a new person go to a ball or a main event for some stupid reason I didn’t know but I was here, and that made them think that I was special in some way.
