A Dangerous Curiosity (The Holbrook Brother Shifters Book 3) Page 17

by Renee Carr

There was just something about the beast, something humanlike. In my trance, I began to take steps forward toward it, walking over and squatting down. Its whimpering stopped and it sat up straighter. We stared at each other for a moment, and as I reached my arm toward it, wanting to calm its nerves, it leapt. I wasn’t ready for it; it pounced without me even thinking. Before I could react, I could feel the fur against me and the body of the wolf slamming me to the ground. Its growl was unlike anything I had heard before and it reverberated through the entire space. In an effort to push it off of me, I accidentally ran my fist right into its chest.

The air flew from the wolf’s lungs and its lips curled. The only thing I knew to do was protect my face and neck, so I lifted my arm to shield myself. The wolf’s fangs pierced my skin but it didn’t rip. Its mouth came open as if I tasted bad, or as if it hadn’t meant to harm me but rather scare me instead. As its teeth released my flesh, something warm and hot burned through my veins. The wolf slammed its paw into my chest, knocking me back down to the ground, and I hit my head hard against the stone floor.

My eyes followed as the wolf took off running from the cave and out of sight. I grabbed the flashlight and came up to my feet before even thinking about it. The pain was real, but I couldn’t even focus on that at the moment. I had to reach my walkie-talkie. I found it on the ground just a few feet away and lifted it to my face, pressing the button. But before I could say a word, everything began to spin, and darkness enveloped me.
