“I get it,” Hendrix said. “This house is on a bluff. Great view of the entire city.”
“Yes,” Nelson said. “One thing, though. Try hard not to be seen when you’re up there. Pretend there’s somebody ready to shoot at you. If you get seen, your compound will get attacked. You can count on that. No lights on in the house at night, either. We’re counting on them not knowing the house is occupied.”
“Don’t they know that this is the residence of the President Pro Tempore?” Maria asked.
“It’s not common knowledge, but it’s not a secret either,” Nelson said. “You could have somebody showing up just because they know it’s the residence of a high-ranking official.”
“What if somebody shows up?” Hendrix asked. “They could climb the wall and get into the house pretty easily.”
“They can’t get into the bunker, so if somebody shows, stay in the bunker and pretend you aren’t there. During the day, carry a gun with you when you’re going to the roof, and make sure you check all the video cameras before going up there. Got it?”
“Yeah,” Hendrix said.
“Good,” Nelson said. “Talk to you later.”
“Wait a minute,” Maria said. “My sister is at the medical facility next to the capitol. Is she safe?”
“Yes, Maria, all of the patients and staff there have been moved to other locations,” Nelson said. “Don’t worry about her.”
“Thank you, sir,” Maria said.
“Anything else?” Nelson asked.
“Yeah,” Hendrix said. “Take care of you yourself.”
Nelson chuckled. “You too, old friend.”
Nelson ended the call. Hendrix and Maria sat looking at the screen for a moment, their minds racing.
“We could lose Texas,” Maria said.
“Yes, we could, but we won’t,” Hendrix said. “Texans can be infuriating at times. Lord knows I’ve had problems with them, given my political views. That being said, they aren’t easily pushed around, and they love their state more than outsiders understand.”
“Is that going to be enough?” Maria asked, turning to Hendrix, clutching him and pulling him closer.
“Anybody who counts out Texas had better get ready.”
“Ready for what?” Maria asked.
“Fury.”
